so... my friend lend my his copy of Galatic Civilization, and without knowing, I installed DirectX9.0B on my anicent Celeron 850 rig powered by the Voodoo5 5500 PCI. (PCI video card? oh yeah...)

the PC ran fine until after a few reboots, I experienced some crashes during Grand Thief Auto3. I thought it was just occassional crashes (since I am still using Win98 (SE no less) ) and should paid no mind. After a day or two I cannot even run it (along with Gal Civ). At first I thought it's my sound card that's giving me the headache (Aureal SQ2500), so I pulled it out and the game can run for a good 2 minutes. I played UT and Q3A just fine but not AgeofEmpires2 so I figure it must be a DirectX thing and since those OpenGL games ran fine. So I fiddle around with my registry, msconfig, and after a few more reboots I can't even play those game no more. My last attempt was "scanreg /restore" and the comp just went crazy. Can't load Word, can't even run explorer, can't even click "Start Menu" and "Run" or "Shutdown."

so I reformat HDD and reinstall everything...

that's how I spend my weekend. :)

why not use Ghost?

since my comp is relatively simple to reinstall, I never bother to learn Ghost.

I did think about that at one point., but now I have it set up so that C: is only like 6 GB. All my docs and files and music and programs are on D and E. This way when i format I can just remake the start bar links to the programs. Some of the programs do require that I backup the registry entries, but not that many.

Makes formating a easy job.

with the specs of my comp, I don't think I need an XP, both my video card and sound card are not supported under XP. Beside, I don't go online with that comp.

Kaido

hey, was Ghost difficult to learn for you? I had trouble using it. I had a Ghost 6.0 that only runs in DOS mode.
