I see there are some gun enthusiasts on here...looking for a 12 ga.

I'm thinking about picking up a 12 ga. shotgun to use to shoot trap, maybe some dove.

I want a pump action.

I'm trying to keep this cheap (in relative terms). I could go out and spend $1200 and get a great gun, but I'm looking for less expensive recommendations if any of you have seen anything.

That too. :p

Though a friend of mine has/had a Mossberg, and I wasn't overly impressed with the 'solidity'...didn't feel as good as my 870 does. That was a while ago, though, I could be wrong...or biased.. ;)

I think the Remingtons are built a little better, but they also cost more. The cheapest Mossberg is about $160 while the cheapest Remington is going to cost about $280.

I bought my 870 used for $175. Probably can't go wrong with either one, though. :)

Yeah I looked at an 870 express. Relatively cheap and it felt good.

I love my dads Winchester but it was like $800 and thats out of my range.

I'm not sure about the Mossberg.

Remington 870 is all around the best shotgun for the money. No it's not the cheapest, but it is pretty inexpensive and it feels good when you put it up to your shoulder.

I wish ammo was cheaper though.

I gotta find a place around here that does trap shooting.

Wal-Mart - case of 250, target load - $41.xx.

But ammo/clay targets is the one thing I will shop at walmart for.

Between Remington and Mossberg, definitely get the Remington. Just a better shotgun than the Mossberg, by far.

If your primary goal is a serviceable weapon for less money, go with the Mossberg. Sure, the Remington is a little better build quality, but my $125 Mossberg 500 kills dove and ducks just as dead as the $1200 Browning Superposed that my friend dove hunts with or the $900+ Benelli he duck hunts with. I wasn't sure when I bought my 500, but here it is 16 years later and now I have the 500, an 835 and a 935, so I don't hesitate to recommend Mossberg over Remington.

Remington 870 Police.

This is the regular 870 with beefier springs, better parts, more quality control tests, and manufactured in a different part of the plant. It also has really nice walnut wood and a better finish.

Goes for about ~$500

Anyone know if that 870 will shoot slugs, or if I would need a different barrel for them? I haven't looked into slugs much, but I wouldn't mind carrying that gun when I go camping with slugs if I needed to shoot a bear or something.

It will shoot slugs without a barrel change.

Hopefully you wouldn't run into a Grizzly, even slugs probably won't stop it.

Really...I know people shoot deer with 12ga. slugs, but a bear is quite different. I would imagine a couple in the head should take care of one, but then I'd really never want to find out. They should work decent on wild cats I would think....again rather not find out.

Your shot placement when getting charged by a Grizzly might not be the best and from what I remember they've found Grizzlys with flattened slugs in their bodies (and didn't die from it).

You can get the 870 as a kit with 2 barrels: longer barrel for shot, and a shorter slug barrel. It's always one of my toughest decisions in the fall what to use for small-game - the 870 or my .22. But, I always use the 870 with a full choke for turkey hunting, and the 870 with the slug barrel for deer. I've encountered several bears in the woods, almost enough to say "routinely encounter bears." Except for those 2 or 3 anecdotal stories gathered over several decades, a shotgun would be pretty much worthless for stopping a bear that's charging you (imho).

True...but around here the black bear is the most common. Still...I'd say a slug would be a better chance than 000 buck shot.
