I mostly watch DVDs since many films are butchered for the theaters (edited for PG-13, edited for time, dubbing instead of subtitles) and most multiplex screens and soundsystems aren't that great.

Some examples of "better on DVD" that spring to mind:

Chronicles of Riddick: theater cut missing all the character development scenes that made it make sense. Also at home you can watch the Dark Fury anime for a double feature.

LOTR: Fellowship in particular missing a lot of character development.

Butterfly Effect: director's cut DVD was actually worth seeing, Kutcher did a suprisingly good job

50 bones! damn that's crazy. I goto the 1.50 theatre even the regular theather is only 7.50 or so. Buying snacks and drinks at a theater is a bad idea, just stop at cvs before hand.

They use to have a movie theater where my parents live that was $1 anytime. Needless to say they went out of business. Next cheapest is 3.00 across the street. Everything else is 10-11 bucks.

I go but I havn't for a long time since there has really been nothing really worth seeing for quite a few months.

But this is the one reason to go: "The UltraView® auditoriums, a screen 75 feet wide by 32 feet tall."

:D

it's a night out with the woman... $20 for movie tickets + another $25 for dinner just before is your ~$50... like once or twice a month if you want.

No wonder so many marriages fail. I like staying home and saving money as much as the next guy but you still need to date your wife once in a while...

home theater's enhancements are also a reason. 25" with a VHS tape always sucked, but now most people have larger screens and unless you really hate your movies you probably have some elementary 5.1 setup. I was at a guy's house recently and he had truly matched the movie experience for the viewer: he had six gorgeous laziboy seats with a high end audio setup and a 119" screen. It was awesome, though very expensive. He hates theaters and never goes to them though.

even in NYC, tickets are only ~$10.

who buys snacks at a movie? I always just go out for dinner afterward.

can't remember the last time I was in a gross theater... all the movie theaters in my area are pretty clean and have tiered seating.

excellent point, but then I say to you what my wife said to me.

"Its not really quality time if we are sitting there watching a movie and not talking to eachother,"

Ugh, you can't win.

My theaters are always clean, and I can't really afford a movie theater size screen for home use either...

maybe when 70" 1080p screens and 1080p movies on hd-bluraywhatever become standard i'll be more inclined to agree with you.

I enjoy going to the movies in the theater. The only bad thing about it is that I constantly worry about having to pee or have stomach problems in the middle of the movie. But I like the sense of having a shared experience with the audience. For example, hearing the laughter of other people probably made watching "Kung Fu Hustle" more enjoyable for me than if I had watched it alone.
