All these loyal AMD ppl aren't bragging about how good their cpu's are anymore and now that the p4 is quite a bit higher in clock speed i read about all these people switching over to the p4's so what gives are you all a bunch of hypocrites??

i think it's because intel is releasing faster chips whereas amd is not... so they're not really hypocrites, it's just that the situation has changed.

AMD chip's are still faster !!! Clock speed doesn't mean everything... I'm stick'in with them all the way.

I am sticking with them as well. I have two AMD machines and I am getting ready to build a third as soon as I can find a buyer for my Intel system.

Hey Nate nothing wrong with AMD ,still great value for money,as for bragging I` don`t need too since I`m very happy with my AMD chip,P4 will come and go just like the old Pentiums so no big deal to me ,nothing stays on top for long in the computer world.

From the looks of it, AMD is still better, but I don't think for long. It seems as though Intel is just hanging back for a while and developing a monster of a processor. From what I've read about the P4, it's scalability is pretty impressive. From what I can see, AMD is still best bang for your buck, but eventually Intel will come back with a monster that everyone will jump on.

i haven't seen or heard to many people switching over to Intel... if they are then they are just as smart as the soccor moms who guy gateway computers... "this number is higher, i'll get this one"

T-Brid 1.4 vs Pentium 4 1.4 in a benchmark contest... $200 price difference.. the 1.4 T-Brid wins.. why the hell would you want to get a p4?

people are idiots

my passion is to find the cheapest way to build a computer that outpreforms the big bangers...

i spent 600 bucks on a p3 600 @800mhz with geforce2 card, 128mb ram my computer and that was 2 years ago.. where that same pc could easily go for $1,500+

AMD is the way to go.. my next upgrade will be 1.4 T-Bird with DDR ram

I like Intel because of the brand name. I might be nuts, but that's just me.;)

well you know, nothing lasts forever and this is more true in the computer world. for a while there it looked like AMD had Intel scared but from the looks of it now, theyve had this ace up thier sleaves and knew it. im not a die hard fan for either, i just like to keep up with technology in this field and will appreciate poducts from both parties. so what if the P4 will blow the A$ out of the water in a year or so? Its the same thing AMD's Tbird did to the P3! i mean if the P4 is within $200 of an amd system, and is that much faster to justify the cost , you can bet your house i ill buy a P4....so long as its not rambus!! :)

I have a PIII, I'm sorry fellas.

But I really want to learn about all this. I don't understand how the Intel Machines with higher clock speeds are actually SLOWER than AMD processors. Can anyone refer me to a site that explains this?

Thanx

For myself,I've always enjoyed trying the newest tech goodies and tweaking and fine tuning to get ultimate system performance. The cpu itself is only part of the picture, stability and maturity of the mb chipset is also a major factor in my decision making process.

I bought a classic athlon and KT133 mb very early in the game,I had so many instability issues with that system that there was no way I was recommending AMD to my clients.Ultra fast clock speeds are cool, but in the day to day routine, home users and small business clients want and STABILITY over all else, the constant crashes, reboots and lockups that I experienced in spite of numerous fixes and replacing of perfectly good components would have been unacceptable to my customers and would have cost my business.

However, all that said, I finally joined the Tbird party, I was delighted to experience the robustness and stability of the KT133A chipset.I've built several Tbird rigs for clients, who are delighted with Win2k rigs that have uptimes of weeks without bluescreens or reboots... they are also more than delighted with the cost of these systems versus P4 rigs
My clients also want a certain, economical upgrade path, most of my people choose AMD rigs in the 800mhz-1g range
knowing that in a year or so that I could simply plop in a 1.4g Tbird and additional sdram or DDR without having to replace the mb and without significant system downtime for them, really makes AMD easy to recommend at this time.

I'm just sitting back and watching(ima amd fan btw :) ) 1200mhz should last me quite awhile, at least through 2 video card upgrades. :)

TBirds and P4's are not designed to be compared on a MHz for MHz for basis. Compare the fastest TBird with the fastest P4, then see what you have to say. Yes, the P4 is much more expensive. But I would pick a P4 over a TBird any day.

But I really want to learn about all this. I don't understand how the Intel Machines with higher clock speeds are actually SLOWER than AMD processors. Can anyone refer me to a site that explains this?

The biggest difference is the length of the pipeline. Roughly, a longer pipeline = higher MHz, while a shorter pipeline = more efficient/more work done per clock. Eventually the extra MHz allowed by the longer pipeline will overcome the inefficiency inherent in its design, & will pull away from AMD's TBird/Palomino cores.

2 GHz is just the beginning.

keyser... try reading the articles here at anandtech, or tomshardware... look at their reviews of the upcoming processors... it will clearly show you that the Thunderbird 1.4 is at par or above the P4@1.7...
...IMO of course

I'm still using my athlon 500 when it FIRST came out.
it's been 3 years and I'm still very happy with its performance and stability.
I don't think I'll ever upgrade... and I definately will never switch back to Intel (unless their prices drop 50%) :)

ya but by the time AMD hits 2ghz Intel's chips will be outperfomring them overall, Mhz or no Mhz, sure the P4 was useless at less than 2ghz, hell Intel knew that, they would have rather pushed the P3 higher before the P4 took over, but that didnt work out, so the useless 1.3-1.7 ghz chips were basically for marketing, to fill in the gaps, above 2ghz you will see that the P4 will start to take advantage of its design. I'm still not gonna buy one, no need for a CPU that high for that much $$ with todays software. But i think once northwood comes out at 2.2ghz, it will start to put some serious hurtin on AMD, i currently owna P3 1ghz, and i see my next system being a 2.5 ghz Northwood, but i wont buy the 2.5 when it comes out, ill wait til they get a little higher so the prices go down, the way prices drop, its kinda stupid to buy chips brand new unless your rich.

Yes clock for clock the T-bird wins.

The price difference is less than $50cdn ($32us)

As VIPER GTS said..you can't compare clock for clock
2.0ghz P4 beats the 1.4 T-bird and Intel is going to come out with higher clock speeds faster than AMD which will allow them to pull away. AMD also can't keep up these prices as they are going to loose money in Q3 (there is a thread somewhere in the forums)

as for Intel, with expected price drops across the board sometime this month, I see them making a huge surge ahead. AMD will still be around, but they'll be the skinny nerd again... Intel could pummel them, but people will keep AMD alive...
