This sucks.

I was in a parking lot for this plate-lunch place. As I was leaving, I was forced into a tight turn . I heard a pop. I thought it was a coke can by the noise it made. I parked and looked at my car. I saw some lines on my car. I rubbed my finger against it and they went away. I thought it was dirt or something.

There was a car right next to me, so I go to inspect his/her bumper. It was a new car, but I don't remember what it was. Anyway, I didn't see any paint damage so I left. As I'm walking away from my car, I look back and see a freakin dent and more scratches. I almost sh!t my pants. I got back in my car and raced back to the store.

The car was gone. I parked and found a sheriff's deputy that was working there. I asked if anyone reported a car hit in the lot. Someone did. I told him I did it. He didn't have the person's number, but he does have the name and address. I asked how bad the damage was. He said it looked like 2 scratches on the bumper and the paint came off. The guy said he'd go back later to fill out a report. The cop took my info and and said he would call me as soon as the guy comes back.

The deputy said the guy was cool about it. I'm hoping the guy will work with me instead of filing an insurance claim.

almost 11 years driving, 1 not-at-fault accident, then THIS!

:frown:

BTW, up close my car looks ok. At a distance, it looks screwed. The reflection makes it worse. :(

Update

I still haven't heard a word from the deputy, the guy, any insurance co, or anyone else. Is it normal to wait a week before taking action?

 for your honesty.

I am sure the person will appreciate it.

Some a$$hole scratched side of my less-than-year-old car and left it as is.

My stomache is in knots right now. I can't eat my lunch. The cop told me the guy didn't think it was a big deal but his wife may go off. I wonder how much this is going to set me back...

Sucks man, but at least you were honest about it. So many a$$holes don't. What goes around comes around...........so hopefully this will have a good outcome for you and not cost too much $$$$

Should of driven off. Depending on the type of car, even if they have to replace the bumper (worst case) I would say it would run $500 max. Unless the bumper is damn expensive.

It reminds me of the (only) time I hit a parked car. I had been dating my wife for less than a month, and she loaned me her car to run back to my apartment for something. I was taking her to the circus that night.

Anyway, I was driving a little...enthusiastic. I pulled ahead of my neighbors car and then slammed it into reverse...and into her car :Q

I about soiled myself. Anyway, the woman who owned the car was very understanding. She was home with her kids so I had the opportunity to deal with it then and there. She agreed to get an estimate, etc. I paid for the damage out of pocket on both vehicles, despite being broke at the time. Nobody ever had to file a claim.

I never questioned any of my actions...except for driving like an asshat in the first place.
Needless to say, my wife and I learned a lot about each other from the whole experience. I don't think I've ever seen her that angry since (we've been together nearly 7 years lol).

Yeah. The cop said it looked like there was no damage other than where the paint came off. I just hope the other people are understanding like a lot of you are...

As for the dent on your car, sounds like a job for Paintless Dent Repair and a little rubbing compound afterward. I admire your honesty.

Good for you for being honest. I have a dent on my hood and scratches on my door from idiots opening up their door and hitting my parked car. My car is barely a year old. :|

 to you. In San Franicsco, people could care less about your car or anyone elses. People here drive like crap and park even worst. I've been so many dings and scratches, I've lost count. If only people were so courteous here in the bay. Lesson here, never drive a nice car in the bay, chances are some a-hole will ding your car and not care.

My wife's car was hit in a parking lot two years ago and drove off. Left us with $1,000 in repairs.

Agreed.

Chances are (disregarding my sarcastic post above) that he will be OK about it. If it's just a scratch I would be OK with it as long as someone took responsibility.

Good for you. Somebody hit my car while it was in a lot, and hit it HARD, completely annihilating the passenger side taillight and scratching the hell out of the bumber. Didn't stop or anything. There was a note on the windsheild from some guy that read "I saw an old lady hit your car liscense #blah blah" but the number was wrong so we never found them.

So I went to a junkyard and found a new tail light (which doesn't match the other one, but it fits in the hole, and thats the best I could do) and I still have a bumber scratched to all hell. But hey, the car is pushing 14 years old, what are you going to do?
