Some people were upset over the shakey camera? Didn't you guys walk into the theater expecting that kind of effect?

The shaky camera thing is such a whiny excuse for not liking Cloverfield. The movie was just DUMB! The way they try to make it seem real and the decisions these characters make are just so misinformed and unrealistic that it nauseated me.

Yeah.. let me go risk my life and others to save my girlfriend even though the message she left sounded like a fucking building collapsed on her.

Next, let's get into a helicopter crash where all the main characters survive and are able to pull themselves from the crash.

Then OF COURSE the video/cam survives a bomb blast while being held out in the open as that dorky kid leaves his last message.

No.. the movie is what it is and if you just pay attention to the monsters you'll like it, but the plot holes could have been easily re-worked to make the movie better as a whole.

It's an excellent monster movie. An interesting monster, with the interest heightened by mystery. I hope they make a sequel. One thing I was kind of curious about is the resilience of the monster. They show some pretty intensive weaponry being deployed against it, including a strip of bombs from a Stealth aircraft, and the monster seems unfazed. Does this mean it's mystical or something?

How can you say it's an interesting monster? The monster is like an underlying plot to the movie! We learn little to nothing about the monster through the duration of the movie. Saying this is an interesting movie is like saying that the Indiana Jones series is about communism and the Nazi party.

If there wasn't an air of mystery surrounding what the monster looked like leading up to the release of the film then it wouldn't have made half as much money as it did.

I saw it last night as well. Interesting movie. I did enjoy it, but it could have been better IMO. It was a good plot, and the premise was great. I just wasn't a huge fan of the camera, and the characters weren't well developed. I also was not a fan of the ending, it just leaves so much left unanswered and without a sequel it wasn't finished IMO.

They left it wide open for a sequel, and I would love to see a sequel done as more in a normal movie style with the same as the first (think HL, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force same story, different perspective) that gives more of the back story. Or one that picks up where Cloverfield left off, and fills in more info about the monster.

Are we talking shaky cam like Blair Witch, or shaky cam like Bourne part 2?

For some reason I can handle the photography of Blair Witch, but the 2nd Bourne was 100% unwatchable to me.

I think it depends a lot on the field of vision (FOV) - how close you sit and your angle. If you watch it at home, it's probably vastly different than on a huge screen in a theatre. It was Blair Witch style. People who had problems in a theatre should give it a look at home.

Complaining about the characters in a monster movie is like complaining about the plot in a porno.

You'd think so, but I couldn't handle Bourne 2 in the theater or at home. I had exactly the same reaction on both screens. Blair was perfectly fine at home, I never saw it in a theater.

I love how all these dudes say the decisions and stuff 'nauseated' them.

Hate to break it to you 'fellas' if that made you sick, you'd be in the fetal position crying for your mommy should you have been plopped into a real Cloverfield situation with your Glock sitting uselessly beside you.

Part of the problem with the "shaky cam" thing is that human eyes have a decent amount of "motion compensation" built into them. So even when running you're eyes (and image taken in from them) does not shake nearly as much as a camera does. Thus, the affect is really overblown compared to what you normally see in real life.

I didn't like it. I'll repost what I PMed someone about it a little while back:

Here is my problem: I didn't care about the characters at all, which is fine, because in those cases I should cheer for the monster, but since the monster was this faceless, well whatever the fuck it was, I didn't care about it either, so I really had nobody to root for. It probably sounds kind of dumb, but in that type of movie I like to have someone/something to cheer for and I didn't have that here.

I didn't find the shaky camera thing to be a problem though, but I never get sick from motion-related disturbances of any kind.

well lets see

1) extremely stupid plot
2) shitty acting
3) stupid camera idea that makes people sick and isnt even interesting
4) the most piss poor sound effects i have ever heard in a movie, EVER. now, i'm not talking about the whole thing, just the noise the little monsters make when they chase people. seriously, i think they paid some drunk ass in an alley to put his moans on a recorder...god DAMN those noises sucked so much ass

however, it was entertaining...thats all i really care about. so for me it was, meh, downloadable. but, i can see why so many people hate it

my only fault was the whole hand held camera idea, it could have been a much much much better movie if it was shot in regular film. i dont have a problem with any of the characters, the plot, or monster, or acting, if I did, I wouldnt like 95% of movies that come out. that said of course those aspects could be improved, but Im not gonna whine about it.

I was very interested after watching while learning about the whole viral campaign surrounding the movie, like a whole shitload of easter eggs, and learning more about the monster through the viral campaigns.

I think you saw a different movie.

1. Cool plot about a monster terrorizing Manhattan
2. Decent acting. Focus shouldnt be on acting but rather on the journey.
3. huh? Camera made the movie and was instrumental in making you feel like you were there. Never once did I or anyone in my family feel sick
4. Shrug.. no problems with sound effects on my end (dolby digital setup on 65" widescreen tv)

I hate shaky cam. Why is this considered fresh? It was fresh when blair witch did it.. and that is mostly because it was done on a tiny ass budget really. It's annoying. I understand it's point, but you know where I see shaky cam? 10-20 minute home videos. And youtube. That's were it belongs IMO. I didn't go see the movie because of this mostly. I just don't find it appealing to go watch something like that.

its supposed to be from the point of view of the group of friends. J.J. Abrams stated it was about the idea that anything that happens in this day and age, someone is going to document it. Thus the youtube idea, and the youtube reference is the whole point. Thus the shaky cam. Now, they used HD cameras that have image stabilization, but they went to great lengths to make it appear as if it were home video, including editing the voices of the actors to make it sound like it was being captured by a home video camera... a good one, but a home camera nonetheless.

For me, I was completely sold. I loved it.
