I saw a SMART car last night!

So I was about to take a turn and I see headlights coming my way so I yield. I look close and I'm thinking "WTF is that a.....a.....GOLF CART WITH HEADLIGHTS?!?!" And as it got closer I see that it's the 2 seater smart car (orange and white) with no trunk taking up half the lane being driven by an old asian lady. I was in WTF mode.

My prediction is that someone is going to drive that on the freeway, get in an accident and die, and it will get sued and lose in court for a bagillion dollars.

If I recall from the crash test videos, those things are solid.

I saw a ton of them in Europe and they looked really nice on the inside actually. I think it'd be fun to have one.

They're probably solid in crash tests because there's hardly any mass to crash. It's like the thing where the smaller it is, the harder it is to break.

They are all over the road here. They have been available for over a year and with the high price of gas they are selling quickly.

Think about all the near misses with this SMART car that would have been deadly collisions if it were bigger.

Vehicle safety isn't about mass. Vehicle safety is about good placement and design of that mass.

They make a roadster with 101HP. Which in a 1700LB car isn't bad. 0-62 in 9.8 seems kinda pessimistic given the HP/LB and the roadster has some style to it.

Edit:
And I think I might be able to fit it in the back of my current car to use as a spare 🙂

what's so smart about it? When I was in Shanghai I saw lots lots of electric scooters (might have a diff name). They were quiet and seem fun to ride.

OMG WOW AMAZING FANTASTIC... oh wait... they've been out everywhere but the US for years.

I would love to try one of those Smart Cars, but I do need some cargo space to buy groceries and such, moving stuff once in a while.
