They are highly competitive little things. Watch them fight over a feeder or a flowering plant. They'll fight till one just gives up and zooms away. We have a group of ruby throated hummingbirds that often spar with each other trying to get to the butterfly bush. Occaisionaly they take the fight to the ground. Mean little suckers!
I love blue jays. There are a couple of them residents among the various birds that live around here. They really like to move.
I have a feather of one that I use as a bookmark in my Bible.
My parents have had a feeder my entife life, and wow are they vicious to each other.
I wish they realized that the feeder is never going to be empty and if they could just share :[
It's been extremely rare, but there have been two hummingbirds eating from the feeder at the same time. Perhaps they were friends or mates. Usually, they chase each other away though :[
Also, sometimes, the damn yellow jackets go for the feeders and we have to kill them because they scare the birds -_-
We have several species of the little hummers around here.
I keep one feeder full of "kool-aid" for them plus I have 2 butterfly bushes, tons of "bee balm" and several other plants that attract them.
"Kool-aid" - it looks like kool-aid in the fridge too.Imagine you've been working outdoors for a couple hours in 90 degree temperatures. Your clothes are dripping from perspiration. You head to the kitchen, pour a big glass of "kool-aid" and chug about half the glass before your taste buds register "that ain't kool-aid" GAGGGGG!

My parents (in the Bay Area) feed them, and it's gotten to the point where there's practically a swarm of them in their yard. It's not unusual to see ten of them flying around the feeder at once. And yeah, they're damned vicious.
When I was a kid we had blue jays there too, but not so much anymore. It all seems to be crows nowadays, and I hate those damned things.
I once caught one in my parents garage growing up. we didn't have a feeder or anything like that up for them, and usually didn't see them awhole lot. Not sure why he got into the garage, but I made sure to trap him in there by closing the garage door. I grabbed the fishing net off the boat and netted the poor little thing. got him out of the net, took him outside and let him go. was pretty neat holding one, light as can be.
