I saved her life, she loved me, i betrayed her

I euthanized one of my dogs today and I am truly heartbroken... :-(

She was a rescued pound dog and has always had some behavioral issues - mostly fear aggression and territoriality aggression. She bit one too many people, and I had her put to sleep. I know many of you will flippantly say a biter must go, but she really was a sweet dog and was entirely trustworthy with her pack. I have 3 small children and they have done all sorts of things to her from eye poking to teat pulling and the worse she ever did was get up and walk away. Her issues were with people walking past our fence and workmen coming into our house.

So this morning I had the horrible experience of taking my dog to the vet and holding her as she was given an overdose of drugs. She went peacefully, but I still feel like I have done something horribly cruel. :-(

RIP Molly

I could but I'm not going to say anything but -

🙁 RIP Molly

That's a very tough call to make, the dog's wellbeing vs. the chance that it seriously hurts someone some day. At least you were able to give her a happy home for a little while.

It is truly sad. I know. But at least it sounds like you gave her a good life while you had her. I know your dog will be waiting for you at the rainbow bridge!
RIP Molly.

I am sorry to hear that, GasX. She was a lovely dog.

Did you try some classes? With her being rescued we don't really know how bad she must've been treated and her behavior may have been to ingrained.

Just curious... what kind of breed?

She had training, medication, training collars, the whole megilla...

She was a mixed breed: Dalmation, Pitbull, lab mix.

She got the twitchy temperament of a dalmation, the jawline of a pit and the family gentleness of the lab.

I have a pit/lab mix. She's never been at all aggressive toward humans (other than barking) but she's attacked a few dogs. She is as sweet as they come but the natural instincts take over some times. We thought we'd have to put her down a few years ago but took other measures and it hasn't been a problem since.

sorry to hear. my dog is very protective of my family and home, so i know how they can be. fortunately, he's all bark.

you did what you felt you had to do even though you didn't want to. sometimes we have to make hard decisions in life.

RIP Molly-dog 🙁

We had a Jack Russel with similar issues. He would get loose every once in a while and bark and threaten the neighbors. When the neighbor threatened to shoot it, it was time to do something. I advertised on KIJIJI and found a new home for him out on a farm in the country. This was a year ago and the dog is doing fine. We visit once in a while and the dog goes crazy when we see it.

I still miss the dog.

Darn, sorry to hear. 🙁 Poor girl probably had tough times before you and didn't know any better. Some habits and temperments are difficult to train at a later age.

You gave her a great 4 years tho, and should feel great about that because she probably would have been put down or lived a miserable existence if you didn't.

I am not looking forward to that trip with either of my cats. Previously in highschool we had a giant male maine my excellent compatriot that got feline leukemia and we put him down. We dropped him off and my dad went through the process. The last cat I had at my parents was an inside\outside cat that never came home one night. Where my parents live I suspect Coyotes got him 🙁

But both of those were relatively mild to the day my cats will be put in their travel cage and brought to be put to sleep.

I feel for you, they are so innocent.

Same thing happened with my dog when I was a kid. He was a great dog (Cocker Spaniel mixed with something else, i can't remember) and would never attack anyone he knew... but if he didn't know you he was very defensive and would bark. If you didn't respect him and approached he would bite 🙁 Unfortunately someone pushed him too far and he did bite them. Not all that serious, but I believe it was a city worker coming to repair a line behind our house. We had no choice, had to put him down. I wasn't even able to go say goodbye, I sat in the car while it happened.

RIP Molly, say hi to Max for me and let him know I miss him 🙁

Sorry man. Sometimes being a responsible pet owner and a loving pet owner can be at odds and this was one of those times
