I removed the fan from the powerunit!

OK the reason eas simply the noise and now my XP 1800 is extreme quiet for an AMD PC.
Thats the good point
Now lets go to the bad point what can happen?
Until now its working like a champ ....

If your temps are still OK, then there probably isn't any real negative.

I replaced my noisy (Antec) fan with a Panaflo L1A. I didn't just pull it because I run a case with negative air pressure (2 rear fans extracting), and the PS heat would just be sucked into the case.

If the PS overheats beacuse of the missing fan then it will.. be destroyed.

try to feel the heat that is coming from the ps, if you think its too hot then you better put the fan back in.

When you smell something burning, it will be the transformer coils in your soon to be dead power supply. When the transformer shorts out it could take out the motherboard, chipset, memory, and all the peripherals. I would put in some sort of fan real quick.

While you're at it why dont you drain the coolant from your car's radiator & see how far you get.

I ran a linux box w/ no fan in the PSU 24 hours a day for over a year and it worked fine. Don't worry about it.

the downsides?
well lets put it this way.. the benefits are not worth what the downfalls could be
i would be willing to bet a large sum of money, that if the PC is working fine now, not forever... i can guarantee this will take away the life of the PS, and maybe even the inner components if something goes wrong in the PC.. it could get ugly. another downfall? your case will heat up inside like mad, the PS box gets pretty freaking hot with no fan, esp. when it has a large draw (AMD machine anyone?) the heat will increase fairly largely inside the case if you ask me, and since you are going for a quiet PC, likely you don't have any exhaust fans. i bet that CPU will get pretty warm!!!

If it's running fine for the first day, it'll probably be fine indefinitely. Sure, it'll be warmer, but it's not going to just catch fire all of a sudden unless it does it in the first 20 minutes.

I have one of those Enermax PSUs with the 2 fans, and 80mm and 92mm i disconnected the 80mm to cut noise, and all seems well, still have air movement and less noise

BTW, obviously they put a fan in a powersupply for a reason. You'll find out sooner or later just why they do that.

It's a great wife thing... I could be in my computer room and my wife will call me to do something and....hehehe low and behold I heard nothing.

Hey ....fans can also be your friends too...

I make it a point to always have a minimum 3 computer running at one time... glad my wife doesn't go in these forums...

any idea on the temps inside the PSU? have you tried putting a fan on it after running for a while, and seeing how hot the air comes out? if it is hot, then you might want to consider putting the fan back, or putting in a fan of some sort

There might be another point, all analog electronics are sensible to heat in their behaviour. The output voltages could now be not as stable as they used to be.
We ll see in the summer if your solution works

What I do is use a 7 volt moded fan in my power supplys, it cools quite nicely and you cant hear a thing when its on.

when my PSU fan died, my computer just kept shutting off at random intervals, around 2-3 min after i powered up. i didn't know what was the matter until i found out the fan was dead. so i try to keep my fan in there. it's not THAT loud.

Hardware, man, you're a danged nut.

Tell you what, put the fan back in your power supply before someone calls a fire inspector, go and order some Vantec Stealth case fans and put two of them in your case and maybe get one for your power supply or better yet order a power supply that is quiet or has a temp controlled fan.

If you want a silent computer then you have to build one that has parts engineered that way like a computer build around the VIA Eden platform.
