I removed HSF/CPU from mobo and my A64 is stuck to the HSF.

use credit card or other flat non metallic item to GENTLY pry / scrape the chip off the hsf. What thermal compound did you use?

I used the stock pad. I dont have any other thermal grease, would it be ok to use the stuff that game with my VF700 zalman cooler?

oh oh...did that before myself. scrape it off, clean it and apply VERY LITTLE of whatever you use (a drop in the middle of the CPU) and it should come off easily next time around.

You could also use a hair dryer to warm it up. If you do this I would do it while it's in my hand just to make sure you don't get it too hot.

Not all "Thermal Gunk" has been created equally. The grease that came with your heatsink should be fine for general computing provided you clean your CPU and Heatsink of the left over grease residue and oils (from your fingers). Then reapply like mentioned above.

However, if you OC, it would be worth the $8.00 or so to purchase a tube of Arctic Silver compound. Its thermal properties are far superior to the stuff that comes with most hsfs.

Dont use the crappy zalman stuff, go out and buy some Arctic Silver 5. They have it at compusa.

You can also twist the CPU to break the suction and then slide the CPU off sideways instead of trying to lift it off.

IMO heatsink compound is overrated. If you must have that last 1ºC then go ahead and spend the $8, however the people who see a "huge" difference in performance probably got half that gain by reapplying (in a proper thinness) the compound as from the actual brand/type of compound.

Remember, having compound already gains performance over no compound. Applying the compound properly also gains performance. Both those gain more performance than the brand/type that you use.

i did that once too(with an ol p4) ..except it took a couple pins with it.. lol dont understand how it was pulled off. but a pin got bent all teh way to the board of the chip... u might want to check for bent pins also.
i had to bend it bak carefully with a needle. all is well now..
