I remember when putting together a new system took longer than the OS installs.

so, i put together a new system.

installed OS, (WinXP) updated OS, installed apps, Updated Apps, Updated Drivers. installed AV, AntiSpyware,

damn, I've been at this the better part of today, 5 hours.

you dont have an entire system install disk? No image of a "fresh" HD you can load on?

amature 🙂

if it were for a client, yes. for myself, no. no 2 systems of mine have ever been similar enough to warrant that.

It takes me about 5hrs also from install to end. i always hate reformating just because it takes so long to do the whole process.

Not if you use Ghost, True Image, or other imaging software. 🙂

A reformat and restore for me takes about 15 minutes.

Gaah doing a new install takes forever.
Install OS, Load all drivers necessary, install updates, install software, re-set up software, work out software problems, pull hair out, etc....

I can format my machine, install Windows with all the latest updates, install all my programs, and have everything configured exactly as it was before the format in under 5 hours.

Methinks you are slow.

You are slow. I could do one in 2 hours or lesss😛

sure you can. downloading 210 mb sp2 and installing it by itself took almost 2 hours.

Maybe someday hard drives will be big enough that we can keep 210MB files around on the off chance we might need them again. We can only hope for such a glorious day.

you have a slow connection,

and everyone should have SP2 slipstreamed already...

and HDDs already are big enough to have stray 210mb files on them....

5 hours? Damn, it takes me about 2 days for a new install. But that includes all the OS tweaking and software installs, games, etc.

Double-click install app. Next. Do you agree to the terms of the agreement? Yes. Next. Next. Continue. Install. Next. Finished. Reboot Now? Yes. Rinse. Repeat 4000 times.

It takes me a little longr because I have to go through alot of Windows settings and change them to meet my needs a personal preferences.

Took me 40 minutes to build my Athlon 64 3200+ system and about 35 minutes for the OS (Windows XP SP2). I have a DVD with all the applications and utilities that needs to be installed. Tweaking the settings takes about a week. This has become boring to me, so far every system I've built works on first boot. And yes, I read the freaking mobo manual.
