Hi Guys.

After more than 6 years built a new pc, but an issue which is long wait times to show the files in the folder or opening the file. What could be the problem?

USB Devices:
  • Logitech G560 Sound system
  • SteelSeries Arctis Pro + GameDAC Wired Gaming Headset
  • UGreen 10Gbps USB C 2 Computer Switch
  • Anker USB C Hub

Questions:
  1. What could be the reason for the slow window opening to show the contents of the folder and file opening (e.g. pdf file or image opening)?
  2. Is the PSU undersized? As I ran Prime and Furmark the power consumption reached above 1000Watt.

LOG:
  1. Uninstalled AiSuite as found glitchy and installed Intel driver directly from intel website.

Resolved:
Almost resolved. WD Dashboard updating SSD firmware. Solved most of stall times but getting random stall times.

Update:
  1. Included CPU Cooler
  2. Connected USB Devices
  3. Updated resolve.

Thanks.

1. It may be a Windows 11 issue. Windows explorer is MUCH less snappy on my Win11 install than my old Win10. I assume you mean folders/files on the local SSD's and HDD's (not network drives).

Are you using intel's chipset driver or the one on the ASUS website?

2. Your PSU is perfectly adequate from a wattage perspective. The review for it on TPU is good and it uses high quality components and has good efficiency at a range of power uses. (the only highlighted issue being short hold-up time which is mostly a non-issue.)

Do you have OneDrive set up in Windows? I find that when a folder is not set to keep stuff locally, you get a delay when opening stuff.

Try explorer patcher to mitigate some of the w11 junk.

Maybe check for a uefi update?

Grab the WD dashboard app to update the firmware.

Windows could still be indexing the drives as well.

It might be a heat issue. What cpu cooler are you using? Did you install a temperature monitor?

If not Onedrive as previously mentioned, check to see if you have any legacy USB devices connected. I had that issue a while back and it gave similar symptoms, along with slow booting into Windows.

For 1., used the Asus website to download the drivers and used the Armoury Crate software for update.

In my case it was an older USB connected hard drive that slowed things down; not sure what others might cause the same type of issues. Best way to eliminate something like this as the issue would be to shut down, disconnect all of your USB cables except those needed for mouse/keyboard, then restart and see if the system performs any better. Not sure how likely this would be as the problem, but fairly easy to check compared to some of the other possibilities.

I wouldn't use ASUS hosted drivers or armory crate for Intel chipset drivers. I would uninstall both and get the intel direct chipset driver.

Is accessing every folder taking a long time or just a particular folder?

If need be, you could try setting up a test folder with a single file in it and see how long it takes to open it.

Some folders that Windows decides are "special" will take longer than others, for example if Windows decides that I've got say music or video content in a folder, it often automatically defaults to a column list that requires deeper scanning of the file contents (e.g. clip duration, mp3 tag information). For such folders, change the detail column layout to the standard (name, date modified, type, size).

If the column layout is the likely issue, you can set one folder correctly and then apply that layout to every folder.

Is the problem limited to one storage volume connected to the computer or any?

I always disable Armoury Crate in the ASUS BIOS in order to avoid all that bloatware. Unnecessary OEM motherboard software has often been a cause of weirdness for people.

I agree: get rid of the garbage motherboard software, and turn off the auto installer option in the BIOS. Though, using the drivers from Asus's website should generally be fine.

Are the drives actually operating at their rates speeds? (ie, benching appropriately and reading as operating at the right PCIe speed)

Have you tried with just a single drive installed?
Do you have the latest BIOS installed?
