I received a "gift" from a friend today. !!

A couple weeks back a friend of mine tried to give me a 26' bayliner.
He said it was sort of beat up but it was costing him too much money between the slip, maintenance and insurance. He still owed $10,000 on it but said not to worry about it and that I could have it for free.
I told him that It felt too much like stealing and that he should just sell it for a few $XXX to someone else and at least make some money back.
I did decline his free offer and another coworker heard about this and ended up buying it himself for a few grand which was really a great deal.
The following weeks I started feeling a little jealous.(duh)
Dumb move some might say.

Well tonight another friend/coworker of mine was telling me that he had an "extra" boat sitting in his yard that he hasn't used in two years because he has a better boat. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he up and gave it to me.
I am now the proud owner of a 24' bayliner with a 350 chevy, a new kicker and it even includes the trailer. Everything works.
He said it looks somewhat like this.

I'm never gone boating. Don't know anyone who owns a boat but maybe when I get older and have some money I could rent one and go out on the ocean for a day.

Nice boat. I prefer sailing myself, but getting out on the water either way is still fun and nice change of pace. These Gin Places don't quite have the same excitement to me though, actually no excitement to be honest, but they are better if you're into just sitting around and fishing I guess.

Don't forget, there's a reason your friend was getting rid of that 26'.

That's really the case in my town. We have about 13,000 people and a marina that is literally the size of some of the large ones in Seattle.

I was told the same thing by this guy. He said a boat is a hole in the water in which you pour money. I have friends that know boats however and I figure if it ever breaks and they can't fix it or if it cost too much to repair then I'll just turn around and sell it for a handful of thousands. A win/win for me.

Was your trip here business or pleasure?
I was born & raised and then moved back with my wife a few years ago.
It's nice to be in America but at the same time have a "buffer". :)

He didn't GIVE it to you. You paid $1 for it.

Otherwise, the GIFT tax on a $30,000 or so boat will probably kill ya.

However, the tax on a $1 purchase wont

OP, "free" and "boat" are NOT synonymous. I used to work for a major manufacturer and a LOT of the cost of a boat is post-purchase.

On a funnier note ... I'm glad your "friend" was not an ex-girlfriend ... and the "gift" was not a baby!

Heres what my boss told me about boats:

"The two happiest in a boat owners life are; the day he buys the boat, and the day he sells the boat."

But boating is definitley a fun sport/hobby, and I cant wait to afford one.

Haha, a distant relative told me something similar:
