I received a bank of america credit card in the mail, i have never applied for it, I do have my car loan through BofA, but havent even looked at their credit card offerings this year. I called to cancel it but she could not tell me how it was opened and the depart that could was closed since its sunday. Should I be worried about my identity being stolen? I have a good credit score, but i dont want this credit card messing it up, the lady that closed it said it wont hurt me because it will be a closed account due to unwanted card, is this true?

I get free credit card applications all the time. I think Capitol One sends me an application almost every week. Along with Amex, Citibank, etc.

I got a new shiney black BofA credit card in the mail and had no idea what it was originally. I didn't apply for anything and it certainly wasn't a new BofA check card. Isntead it was replacement of my old MBNA credit card.

i only have 3 primary credit cards, a citi divided card, amazon.com, and an amex clear, i also have a Circuit city and Comp USA card. The rep said my account was oppened on 9/15/2006 so it looks like a new account. I checked my report with equifax and i dont have any recent ur unknown requests that i applied for. however under the the requests that dont affect me there is one from BofA on 9/15/2006

Credit card companies used to do that all the time until people would rack up the cards then never pay.

do you have a checking account with BoA ? That could explain. Wells Fargo and BoA will automatically send you a Crecit Card when you open up a checking account.

and Yes, I am NOT talking about debit card. They will send you a Debit card followed by a Credit card.

BoA never did that with me.
They really do that? Without consent or anything? That would piss me off...seems fishy though

BS....I worked for a major credit card company for 8 years. Unless you specifically agreed to it during the process it opening the account....that would violate so many regs it's not even funny.

I would think that this would be the case too. I'm waiting for BofA to replace my wachovia/mbna card now...

They are sending out new cards? That is weird because I haven't received one. I hope they don't replace mine anyway because I like the one I have now. It's an FSU card.

I guess they're breaking so many regs then. I signed up for a BofA checking account 4 years ago, then closed it 2 years later because I moved out of their territory (no local ATMs). I pulled my credit report on a whim last year and lo and behold I had a BofA Visa account on it (of which I never saw a physical card or a single statement for strangely enough).

When I opened up my checking account for a debit card, one day a credit card section randomly showed up on my web log in.

Its the same with Wells Fargo. If not, care to explain why do i have 2 cards for each of my accounts with each bank (CC/DC for personal checking at BoA, CC/DC for personal Checking at Wells Fargo, CC/DC for Biz account at Wells Fargo).

And all those Credit cards were automatically sent to me. I just opened the checking accounts.

I hope what gsethi said is a valid explanation. (open checking = new CC)

yes, you do have to activate your CC to use it. Even if you dont activate it, it will show up on your credit history.
