There was a discussion going on in the JFK Reloaded news section and here is my thoughts (which I posted earlier in that section, but wanted to take to OT), in general, on the subject.
Here's a fun game for you!
Character: You are a middle-age Iraqi man, that works for al-Qaeda by performing terrorist acts, to make money for your family. The US has invaded your country and is making quick work of killing off your comrades and you, your family and your city is next on the list.
Mission: Kill off hordes of US soldiers as they try to invade your city. Take as many US soldiers as possible hostage and use them as leverage in "life-like" dealings with the US government; extreme torture and pain tatics may be used on the captured, which can include beheading.
REAL names of captured and killed US soldiers will be used during gameplay and you are given bonus points for killing one or more of the listed (in real life) KIA or MIA soldiers during combat.
Later missions include bombing of real US monuments (including a reenactment of the bombing of and later plane crash of the "Twin Towers" aka the World Trade Center--learn to pilot a 747 and actually take over one during gameplay) and historical buildings and the destruction of major cities inside US terrioty! You will be able to see and interact with "life-like" US citizens and watch as they are blown up, shot or whatever way you, as a member of al-Qaeda, see fit to deal with "these people".
Sound fun? It sounds like fun to me...why not you? There's plenty of games pretty much like this, but of course in different settings/times/etc etc, but I just thought I'd try to "mix up" the races a bit and see what people reactions would be to a game like this, instead of seeing the usual "White man/army" kill "INSERT MINORITY RACE HERE" for whatever reason and while your at it call it "a historical reenactment" that does not offend anyone...and the reason I say "White man/army" is because you do not see any blacks, latinos or asians in the games (or at least any you can control) unless they are being killed.
BTW, anyone play GTA3: San Andreas yet? It's sort of like the game stated above except it's just showing mostly "black on black" crimes...nice change from the east coast to west coast style GTA...I'm surprised no supposed "leaders" in the black community have not complained about this game yet...
And please don't guess or assume what race I am, as a lot of you like to ASSUME and probably will make this into a race case...I think I'll leave my race out of this one as it is not part of the topic here...really this should all be about games being insensitive to a person (as in this case) or a certain group of people and portraying them in a disrespectful manner, which this game does...and a bigger issue here is that game developers say that these games do not have an effect or change the way "people" in general feel about that the race/gender/etc that is being portrayed in a negative way or is the "bad guy" and I agree...BUT, while they say "people" what about the 8 or 10 or 12 year old boy who sits in front of this game 4-5+ hours a day on this game...how does it effect him? ...and for those of you who say that, "it's up to the parents to regulate what their kids watch/play/hear/etc".
1. Parents are not with their kids 100% of the time (on avg out of a 14 hour day it's around 28.5%) and should not be expected to be
2. Parents do not play these games and DO NOT know how "life-like" these games are and even if they did play them, the game would not have that much effect on them, as they would not play NEARLY AS LONG as some of these kids
3. I speak from personal experience, I know a kid who plays GTA3 for a few hours a day and has cussed out his teacher(s) 3x so far this year and gotten into 5 fights...btw...he's 10...and he has excellent parents and his siblings are all, for the most part, doing well in school and life, with the occasional trouble here and there.....point is though...he's the only one out of the house who plays GTA3...any connection there or just coincidence?
