I'm trying to run a fresh install of Win98 using my new Tekram DC-390U3. I have a Cheetah HDD and a Pioneer SCSI DVD.

It shows no fixed disks present when I run fdisk from a floppy. Both the HDD and DVD show up in the SCSI BIOS just fine. I'm pretty sure I have everything correctly installed.

Do I need to install drivers first? And if so, how do I do that?

Any ideas?

Update, I installed an IDE CDROM and booted off of the Win98 CD. Trys to install a default 98 driver and, it says no hdd found.. So I'm thinking I need a device driver before I can install the OS. but, how do I do that?

What mobo do you have...In the BIOS you have to set the 'SYMBIOS SCSI BIOS' to auto or disabled. I think it's Auto. But try them out. I think that would help.

You need to get a boot floppy with a scsi driver for your controller. A windows 98 boot floppy (which can be made from an installed w98 system such as a friend's system) has scsi drivers on it but I do not know if there is one for your scsi contoller.

Look at Tekram's web site to see if there is anything there that tells you how to make a boot floppy for your controller or how to install the correct drivers on a boot floppy.

Are you using a recent enough version of Fdisk?

AoD, I have an Abit KT7 RAID. Auto?? huh?

pjs, I don't think the Win98 bootdisk has the driver for my adapter. I can't find anything on Tekram's site that says how to make a bootdisk with the correct drivers. As far as FDISK goes, it's the one that came with Win98SE.

I insert the win98 CD. It goes to the Win98 CDROM Startup Menu and I choose to boot from CDROM.

I then select Start Windows 98 setup from CDROM

It tries, and fails, to install the generic ATAPI and SCSI drivers and gives me this message:

Device driver not found: 'OEMCD001'
No valid CDROM device drives selected
The Windows 98 Setup files were not found.

Got any ideas?

It is set to boot from SCSI first. I guess that's why I'm confused why it won't work.

I have the Tekram DC-390U3D kit. I have a terminator, controller, hdd, and then another terminator. "I wasn't for the sure if the HDD was selff terminating or not so that's why I'm using 2.

I know the cables are correct, they came with the controller.

This is driving me crazy..

Doesn't the LVD cable for yer hard drive have a built-in terminator?
I'm assumin you have the hard drive on 68-pin LVD cable and DVD on 50-pin cable.

I doubt very seriously that the termination has anything to do with my problem. As everything appears in the SCSI BIOS correctly. HDD ID is 0 and the adapter is 7. And yes, the hdd is on the 68pin LVD and the DVD is 50 pin.

I think I have to somehow load a driver, but how and where?

Hmmm, on my Asus mobo I have the mentioned option. To be able to boot from my ATA66 controller I have to set it to Auto. What it does is to check wheater you have a SCSI-controller with or without its own BIOS. I don't know if the Abit mobo have the same feature, but I think it does.

AoD ;)

PS. I ofcourse have to tell it boot from ATA66 :)

[EDIT]If I don't set this feature to auto it won't find my controller. My and my friend used quiet some time before we figured that out...[/EDIT]

I don't see it anywhere. I dunno. I'm getting pretty bent over this. Beenning wasting the better portion of the day fighting with this damn thing. :(

I have the IDE devices turn off completely, as I am not using any IDE devices.

I just want to figure out why I can't load an OS on my SCSI setup.

Is the DVD terminated?

What jumpers have u set on the HDD?

What generation Cheetah?

Are u using the LVD terminator?

If so, where is it placed on the cable? which position?

Do u have a 6-position LVD cable?

Did u get the SCSI card + Cheetah new?

Have u reviewed the jumper designations for the HDD? (at Seagate website)

Is the SCSI bios installing? After the SCSI bus scan, does it say "SCSI bios installed successfully? .. or "SCSI bios not installed"?

Can u heard the Cheetah spin up?
