I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have both of these near by and only had a Best Buy to go to :(

Well here in NYC there is best buy and I guess J&R. There is another shop in manhattan called Datavision but I haven't been there in years so I don't know what they have.

I live in Charlotte. Charlotte is a rather big city. You'd think I'd be good, right? You'd be wrong. We have NOTHING except for Best Buy. Nothing. No Microcenter. No Fry's. No nothing. Ugggh.

I've never none the awesomeness of places like Frys and Microcenter, as Northwest Ohio had none. I get to Columbus for school, and what do ya know... there's a Microcenter about 10 minutes from campus. Kickass. :)

so basically you told a potential customer to go somewhere else.

what a dick.

no wonder you have a 'small' computer repair shop.

Thank you very much.

I don't miss the original CC and CompUSA at all. They both heavily overcharged for just about anything and CC scammed people with fine print. If the OP used these stores to buy emergency parts I feel sorry for him, because he must have wasted a lot of money. He should have given this money to me. I'd buy parts for the OP at a much cheaper price and keep the rest for myself. The very reason why CC and CompUSA closed down is because they were bad stores and their owners were bad businessmen. They didn't care about their customers, they scammed people, their salesmen were rude, and customer support was all but nonexistent. (here in NYC) And so, they failed. I am surprised these stores remained afloat for so long. This is probably because of ignorant people willing to pay more to wait less or avoid doing research.

Microcenter is the only place I go to now. Great prices and availability when they get newly released CPUs.

yea bad selection, bad general vibes at their stores, it just felt wrong somehow. prices were never impressive either, far from it. i went to each maybe once a year, and yea each time it was an omg how is this store still alive feeling. at cc it seemed like if a worker was going to bother ringing you up for a purchase he was doing you a favor:p

http://www.michigancomputer.com/ will give you the names of some local places. I haven't gone to my local guy in ages, but his prices were always better than CompUSA.

I'm in Metro Detroit and that store is an hour and fifteen minutes from me. :(

It's only about 15 minutes from me. :D

Also, there's a plaza near it that has another store; Stone Computer. I've never been in there, hell I'm not even sure if they are still open I just remember its near by.

There used to be another place Computer Builders Warehouse but it went out of business like 3 years ago.

Though it would really rock if we had a store that sold actual components like motherboards, but doubt that would happen. We had a small one with an internet cafe/repair shop and they closed shop as that type of business runs at a loss when you factor in rent, etc. You have to overprice stuff to make profit, and most people will just order online. I actually attempted to get into that business and one thing for sure, the profit margin is maybe 1% if you want to compete. In fact, I found that sites like Tigerdirect are STILL cheaper then what it cost to buy wholesale. My business was too small for me to hold any stock and I did not have physical space so I had to order on demand, so if people are going to wait, they may as well order online themselves. In fact I had a few shipments that I totally made a loss on, as they came up over 100 bucks and my pricing only factored in 40 bucks of shipping. I also used to fix PCs and stuff and that was really the only place I made profit as I would just order a part and overcharge for it as a convenience fee. Repairing alone would be semi profitable, but when I hit college I had no time anymore so I closed shop.

If I lost my job I'd probably attempt it again though.

But yeah, I think localized computer stores are pretty much dying. Only the really huge ones survive.

I hear ya, man. It's sad.

Especially when people can just go to WalMart and buy a pre-built PC.

(Granted, I can build a better one for the same price out of parts ordered online, usually. But people so seldom want that.)

I have Best Buy, Staples, and Office Depot in town. We never had CompUSA, but we did have Office Max and Circuit City. Our Office Max closed a year or two ago, and it's obvious when Circuit City closed. The closest Microcenter is 3 hours away, and the closest Fry's is 7 hours away.

I only miss the competitive effect on pricing. With them gone, BB is much less likely to lower prices to compete, since in this area, their only direct electronics competitor is Sears. Neither Target nor Walmart offer a wide selection of electronics.

I gave up shopping for computer parts locally since the local prices are insane compared to places like Newegg. It would be nice if there were a Fry's within a reasonable distance, but I don't see that happening any time soon.
