I really like the New Jetta!

All I can say is...I'm impressed! I went with a friend to look at a used VW and while at the dealership I sat inside the new Jetta. The interior is NICE! Of course they had a loaded one in the showroom with wood and leather.

But then I asked for a test drive, and we drove a 2.5 with 6-speed (Tiptronic) and the standard interior. There are no cloth seats!!! Even standard it comes with a faux leather which is still much more comfortable than cloth (but not as supple as the real leather.)

Standard, the Jetta comes equipped with heated seats, climate control, trip computer, security and a 6-cd changer with MP3 playback. It also has front and side airbags (no curtains). Outside, the standard features continue with ABS, traction and stability control. All this for $24k (only $2k more than what my last 4-cyl Accord cost, but with more stuff.)

The engine is NICE...its only rated at 150hp but it feels BIGGER! I think it has 180lbs-ft of torque (inline 5)...I think the 6-speed tranny is what made the difference in how it felt. Mind you I didn't get a chance to take it on the highway but it is plenty quick off the line at a stoplight.

My only complaint I had was my long legs didn't seem to fit all that nicely under the steering column, but then again I didn't spend much time adjusting the seats (if there's a height adjustment I didn't find it, and that would have made all the difference.) The car also didn't seem as wide as it should have--on the inside its about as narrow as its predecessor, and I felt it in the seats.

By far the biggest surprise is the amount of value VW packed into this little car. It will DEFINATELY make me think twice about buying another Accord. I'm not in the market for a car yet, so I won't have to worry about VW quality problems in the 1st year when I start looking. All you sport freaks should know that when the GLI hits this summer, a DSG sequential manual tranny will be an option with the 200hp engine.

Id question the reliability. Unfortunatly our last Passat wasnt the best in that department :( Great car otherwise :)

The giant chrome grill and overall sh*tty exterior appearance ruin the car for me. It doesn't have the German look anymore, IMO. It looks like a Jetta that mated with a Corolla.

It sounds like it has a ton of features, though.

You're about to buy a German version of the Corolla, made in Mexico. But if it's as reliable as the Corolla, why the hell not.

Well if their goal was to woo over Japanese car buyers...its working on me! I didn't really care much for the exterior either, but after I sat inside it I forgot how ugly it looks on the outside (only the front...backside is fine.) Some models even have altezza-type lights in the back...totally wh0ring themselves to Jap buyers! That graphite blue color is soooo nice too.

Like I said, I'll wait a year to see how reliability goes. VW already said they are making substantial mods to reduce interior highway noise in the 2005.5/2006 model. Looks like they are committed to correcting mistakes when they find them...this time!'

I wonder how many miles this Subaru I'm driving has left on it...

It's a pretty nice car, but the price really skyrockets if you opted for too many options. Its interior is better than most domestic so-call lux cars. If you prefer German engineering and Mexican labor, it's a perfect fit. Otherwise get a Japanese car. An Accord V-6 is faster and roomier, not mentioning cheaper (I'm talking about a Jetta with all the options vs an Accord V-6)

The two Jettas that my family had - 00 and 01 - (I bought a GTI, so I still have my man card, thank you very much) had quite a few issues, so just be careful if you buy one.

Admittedly, it is a fun car to drive, and they've always felt more "peppy" than whatever horsepower they were rated at.

Soon as the thought "I really like the new jetta" went into your brain, above in the clouds god confronted your soul and said "Son, It's time to turn in your man card".

How come if I buy it without a trunk (i.e. Golf) my man card gets upgraded, but if I buy it under the Jetta name I have to turn it in?

Er... Golf might upgrade your high school student ID, but not your man card. :p

Is the base price seriously $24k? That's a bit high for what's supposedly a compact.

No no no, the base price (Value Edition) is only $17k, and the VE tops out at $19k nicely equipped (with the 6-speed auto and stability control.) The $24k is for the 2.5 I mentioned with more goodies standard.

I don't like the looks of it too much. Doesn't look very german.

also, on a whole, im upset with VAG's stupid trapezoid grille. Yes, it did look nice when the cars were 3ft wide - they arent anymore, so it looks like ass.

the 2.5L I5 sounds intresting though. I've got two older audis with a 2.3L turbocharged I5. Stock horsepower with low (stock) boost is ~160. Just uping the boost a little gives you 225+, and you can go higher yet with some extra work on fuel delivery.. (I've seen 280hp with ~22psi)

But - I wonder how similar of an engine this one is. I've heard the new one uses a timing chain instead of a belt? I wonder if it is mounted slanted, or straight up and down.. in the 100/200's it is on a bit of a slant. "leaning tower of power" ;)
