I *really* just destroyed by car

I'm writing this from the cafe car of Amtrak train 67, heading to New Jersey. Why am I on the train? Well, I was supposed to drive, but I got in my car, drove about a mile, and the entire car locked up. I began to hear a clanking noise, followed by a very loud grinding sound. My shifter popped out of gear, and when I tried to move it, it would no longer move.

Apparently, my transmission is completely gone. And the clutch may be gone. And I may have done some damage to the engine according to the tow truck driver because of how things broke.

😕

In other news, the Stone Cellars White Wine on Amtrak is quite nice.

What the hell happened?

Hmm... Completely lost the main bearing perhaps?

I have absolutely no clue

Maybe the input shaft seized up. But I call shens on transmission problems breaking the motor, unless you have some crazy racing clutch in there.

Agreed.

And yeah, input shaft bearing is what I meant.

So either way I'll need a new trans right?

That's most certainly what they'll recommend. It'll probably be cheaper to throw a used one in there than rebuild the one you have. Even if it only needs a new input shaft bearing, it's silly to open something like that up without replacing all the wear parts.

Putting a used transmission in might be cheaper than you think. What car?

Check your PM.

What year is the Civic? May not even be worth 2300

2300?!?!??!

Is that the stealership or what? Call around, that sounds way too high.

You should be able to find a used transmission with 15 - 30k miles on it for ~800 bucks or less. It shouldn't be more than another 800$ in labor.

Clutch is about 100 bucks.

Edit: I had the transmission replaced in my Insight because the input shaft bearing went out. The Insight uses the Civic transmission with some lighter internal components. Apparently the input shaft bearing failure is fairly common in these transmissions. Unfortunate. Total cost for used transmission with 15-30k installed was $1450 with new clutch.

Mine didn't lock up, but probably would have if I kept driving it. It was so loud and... grindy.. at the end I was afraid to drive it.
