Ok my dad has used Wachovia for probably 20 years. He does all his personal and business banking through them, including paychecks. I use Bank of America and have for a few years, Im mostly happy with them and usually just deposit my check into my BoA account and call it a day.

I forgot to pay my car insurance, its due tomorrow, so I figured id cash my check at wachovia first before depositing so that I can pay my insurance today. They charged me 5 bucks to do it because I dont have an account there :|

When the fuck did this start? I havent cashed a check there in a couple of years (and sure as hell never paid to do it when I did), as I had moved out of town for a while, lived in kansas and I cant tell you how many times I cashed checks at numerous banks there and never got charged a damn dime to do it. My check wasnt even a big one, I work part-time and it was for $155 :-/

Edit: And what made it worse is that the teller didnt even mention the fee until she was handing me my cash.

Was the check drawn on Wachovia? If so I would be pissed too if they charged a fee to cash it.

Banks are private. Hell use an atm and you get a fee, they don't make money if you don't have an account since they can't lend the money.

Yes, unless you sign it over to an account holder.

Some banks like Wells Fargo even make you get a thumb print before they cash your check if you don't have an acct. w/ them.

The two things that I do not understand:

1. Why didn't you just deposit the check at BoA?
2. Why are you not signed up for Direct Deposit? Is it not available where you work?

You should let the person that wrote the check know that their bank does not honor checks they write for the full face value for non-account holders. I could understand them charging a fee for a check not drawn on their bank for a non-account holder assuming they would cash it. I would not have my account with a bank that had a policy like that.

While I realize that BoA doesn't technically make the deposited cash available right then and there, the funds should be listed as "Pending" once you deposit the check with them. All pending deposits within a group of pending transactions are considered first even if that pending deposit was made AFTER a pending withdrawal. That means that you can pay off any bill even if those funds are not current considered available in your account and you will not incur any overdraft charges. My account is with BoA and I do this all of the time.

I hate Wachovia. We had them for a few months, and they used to piss me off because they would sit on my paycheck for a week and half to two weeks before clearing the funds. The stupid thing was, the damn check was drawn on Wachovia. I only used them while we were waiting for my wife to officially start her job so we could switch to the North Carolina State Employee's credit union, which rules.

Unless they decide to screw with you and put a hold on the check.

Ya, they often do that if the check is coming from a new job. After the first few checks this isn't so much the case. You can easily find out if that is going to happen before making the deposit though.

They have been doing this for years and years. You must have just been lucky in the past.

And I still don't understand why you didn't just deposit it at BoA. Cashing the check doesn't do you much good if you still can't write a check to pay the insurance. So you had to still take the money to BoA to write the check. Unless, does your insurance company accept cash payments?

Federal law states that BoA must make at least $100 of your check deposit available within 24 hours (so you'd have the money before your insurance amount is due). All banks that I know of make that $100 available immediately to comply with the federal law. That amount is a good chunk of your $155 check.

Other possibilities: open a free Wachovia account. Heck, Wachovia often pays you $50 to open an account. Free $50 is better than $5 fee. Or get a $500 buffer in your bank account so no problems like this will arise again. Or get overdraft protection (but be careful of fees here). Or time your finances a bit better - have the insurance bill due long after you get your paychecks. Or take it to a supermarket, they usually only charge $2 to cash it. I could go on and on.
