i really hate steam

I hate steam cause now it broke my PC, it says I cant connect to any VAC servers and all the servers here in South Africa seem VAC protected.

Every time I try to install Half-Life 2 through Steam my connection gets cut out in the middle of it and it says the file is temporarily unavailable. I can start it up again and it continues from where it left off but when I go to start a new game it freezes. Ghey!

I've had pretty good luck with it. I don't use the friends list so I can't comment on that, but I don't think I've had to wait more than 2 minutes to play a game, and that was after my computer hadn't been connected to steam for 2 months. I'm on broadband though, that autoupdate would really suck on dailup.

My main complaint is that I don't think valve tests their updates enough before release. CS:S has started to crash on my once every hour or so after a recent update. Its not very frequent so its not a killer but its annoying. I'm always concerned they're going to break the game totally for me, as I hear thats happened to others.

not a single problem since day one, never tried the friends list either

Try it. Sign into the Friends service, add someone from a server you're on, close everything down and start it again, and poof! Friends gone! Yay!

Steam is a two edge sword.
The Good: You don't have to worry about finding the disk to run the game or maintining upgrades (since they are automatic).
The Bad: You can't run the game without steam, HL2 pricing on Steam is too high, Steam should not be running all the time (yes, I know I can disable it), and Valvle should not be trying to screw eveyone who bought the game at retail.

But it looks like the wave of the future - like it or not. The Best Buy software shelf just keeps getting smaller and smaller...

Try that and you'll get stuck trying to log into the friends service 😀

its gotten better. its true once or twice it took a while to get started, but thats outa many mnay plays. otherwise its auto patching and free new sweet cs source maps and such are just neat. buncha whiners.

I hope that everyone realizes that Gabe's goal is to immulate the WOW model - translated they want Valvel to produce "Episodic Games" about every quarter and charge $15-$20 per game. This equates to about $120 for the equivalent of Half Life 2 - what a deal.

The new business model in America is to get consumers to pay a monthly fee for something on an ongoing basis! Things that were free will now cost you a fee to participate - basically GREED rules!

not even the friends list?

XFIRE!!!
ya, the steam friends list blows, but the rest isn't THAT bad. It is a nice way to make sure everyone is always updated, even though the updates aren't always that great.
