I believe Atlanteans story. I could imagine some redneck from Huntsville or Pasadena (outside Houston) saying something akin like that. There is still A LOT of race issues in this country. A couple weeks ago I was talking with a kinda redneck contractor and he told me that he is bringing over a worker to our office. This is exactly what he said, "Yeah, he's a black guy, but he's good." To be honest, I DONT' find that a racist statement. Its a sad matter of fate that black people do tend to be less educated, as do hispanics, and do tend to have a chip on their shoulders (whether that chip is justified or not is another topic altogether), both which hinder their ability to attain success (the same can be said about less educated, lower income white people as well).
But later in the week i did experience a racist scenario: a white worker told a black janitor of our company that they 'work him like a ni**er.' Can you believe that? He probably didn't realize what he had just said but I was infuriated. I asked the black guy to give me the guys name but he never told me which person said that. I would have raised hell on his company (they were contracting for us, and i'm the CEO

)
But Atlanteans experience was blatant discrimination and stupidity. I disagree with Carbonyl to a certain extent regarding his claim that a lot of white people think like that. I'm sure most rational, educated people, of any skin color, would acknowledge the fact that Michael Anderson was no ordinary black person, let alone ordinary human being. They don't put a bunch of idiots in space, these people were the creme de la creme of scientists, military personnel, etc. While he is probably right in saying that a lot of people on ATOT refrain from saying certain things when they think it, i'm sure almost everyone would disagree with the comments that customer made to Atlantean. I would have kicked his ass over this insensitive remark regarding his lack of concern over the tragedy, and then, for his racism, and not cared about the consequences.
