I *really* hate ATI's Catalyst Control Centre!

I've had my 9800 PRO for a year now and things have been plain sailing. I reformatted a couple of weeks ago and decided to install the new control centre drivers. Things were fine until yesterday...

Whenever I try to access the Control Centre I get a warning! And what does the warning helpfully tell me?

No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware.

So I uninstalled all ATI components and cleaned up using Driver Cleaner. I also reinstalled .NET 1.1 with SP1 just in case. Finally I reinstalled the Catalyst Control Centre v4.9. I've just restarted and guess what? I'm still getting the same warning when I try to get to the control centre, but now I've got the older driver in place in the advanced display settings. WTF??? Well, at least it *should* work now!

I don't upgrade my graphics card THAT often. I moved from a GF2 GTS to a 9800 PRO last year and I don't plan on upgrading my 9800 PRO for at least another year. But come on, what is up with the driver? I've never had any problems with graphics drivers previously and this is just damn annoying now! I've downloaded the Control centre cats and they just don't work. No way am I gonna reformat!

Has anyone else had this problem yet?

Also, why can't ATI have a decent refresh rate override in the drivers? I still need to use ReForce to get it right!

Thanks for reading my rant....

There`s one built into ATI Control panel, for CCC go to display manager click on that, then in the window with the monitors pics just right click on it with mouse and select "device properties".

Btw the new CCC is working fine with my XP/SP2 & 9700NP ,I too used Driver Cleaner in safe mode, did you also run cab cleaner as well?

I would also download the 4.9s with the old control panel to see if it`s a problem with the new CCC(remember to remove your current ones).

Well, I installed the 4.9 CCC and the old panel has now come up (for some strange reason). So I think I'll wait for the 4.10 CCC and then d/l that and install it instead!

It is the 4.9 CCC as it can easily be distinguished from its bloted size!

Whenever I try to change gamma and brightness levels in the new control panel, it has absolutely no affect on in game play. Anyone else have this issue?

I uninstalled the 4.9's because it would not remember the refresh rate settings when switching users in WinXP. It kept backing down to 60Hz. Using 4.8's now and everything is fine. Unfortunately both 4.7 and 4.8 will occasionally blue screen when switching users. I really need to go back to 4.6. :(

If you mean the system tray, you can remove "ATI CATALYST System Tray" from the "Startup" folder and right click>exit on the system tray icon.

The ATI Uninstaller (aticimun.exe), true to its name, uninstalls all ATI drivers, registry entires and demos.

It is normal that uninstalling only the CCC leaves the CP. Personally, I see no reason to use the CCC until the CP is discontinued and no longer works with necessary drivers or some significant option is only available in the CCC (which unfortunately seems the way they are inclined). Until further development just download the CCC-less package if you want to run the single main setup, otherwise run the driver and CP setups seperately.

The only problem I have with it is that it's insanely slow, especially on my laptop.

Chilled,

Got the same exact error message, back when CCC first came out. I just rebuilt my PC with a slipstreamed XPSP2, and installed 4.10 + CCC fresh, and guess what???? Exact same problem :(

I even filled out a tech request months ago and got ZERO RESPONSE. For this one and only reason, I will no longer be purchasing ATI video cards. If they aren't going to even respond to my tech support request - from a registered, paying customer who has had 5 ATI video cards - then I will no longer be sending my $ across the border.

Sorry for the bad news. ATI is a sucky company. Hopefully I will get better support from BFG when I purchase my 6800GT.
