I realized this cancer thing really hits home. A friend died today.

God damn it.

She was my youth pastor back in HS when I used to go to church. She was a sweet soul. I haven't spoken to her since then. It's funny I can't pin point the last time I spoke to her, but I vividly remember the first time I met her. I walked into her office and she was smiling brightly saying, "Yes you found the right place!"

Now it's her, my GF's dad currently has one, and my dad's friend's son died too few years ago.

I'm starting to realize this whole cancer thing is not something I see or hear about in TV or movies. I'm appalled so many damn people die from it and I know this many personally.

A quick Googling shows about 600,000 die from cancer in US annually. AIDS is about 17,000.

It's time we beat this stupid disease, no?

sorry to hear that man. cancer does indeed suck. my uncle died few months ago from lung cancer, which he outlasted the docs predicted life left by over 2 years. he was a fighter though. he didn't really really suffer up until month or two before he died.

my dad died at the snap of a finger, totally unexpected.

not sure which is harder to deal with, but they both suck 🙁

Fuck cancer.

<-- misses his mom :-(

Fvck cancer. Fvcking seriously.

Yup take care of yourselves. You got one body treat it well.

Its not really possible to "beat" cancer, your DNA just gets worn out. Things that directly cause damage to DNA simply wear it out faster.

Both of my parents had a form of cancer

Not sure how they both survived through it and I think it's something I took for granted

That sucks.

Sadly, saying we need to cure cancer is like saying we need to stop all crime. It doesn't make sense. The best we can do is find treatments for specific types of cancer that use specific methods of propagation

That's the unfortunate issue: unless we figure out some genius and revolutionary scientific/medical breakthrough, one that would change everything, cancer as a disease isn't going anywhere. 🙁
Sure, we can tackle specific ones in time, but the whole concept of cancer itself is basically hard-coded into genetics.

If we ever figure out how to beat cancer, that same discovery could quite likely lead to "immortality"/a cure for aging - if it's not all the same discovery.
It would basically require some method to prevent DNA degradation, likely involve some kind of advanced cellular apoptosis hack, DNA tweaking that provides an armored-defense against free radicals, and a wholly new approach to pretty much everything.
Of course, there's also the whole population issue - cheating nature like that only delays and strengthens her efforts... it would all come crashing down on us, unless we radically changed our attitudes and behavior and found some room to expand.
