If you are not damaged by visible light, then microwave radiation should not either

Uhm, simple answer, you are an idiot. Complicated answer, you are a fvcking idiot.

So, if microwaves don't hurt you, then you wouldn't mind if I made a large microwave-oven and stuck you in there?

LOL, yes microwaves will burn you, just like how infrared radiation from fire will burn you. But it's not radioactive.
You'll know the microwave "radiation" is leaking if you get burned when you're close to it. If you don't feel anything, then it's not leaking.

You are the only idiot here who doesn't have a clue what radiation is, and thinks it's automatically bad.

hey, guess who didnt read my response to that post...virtualgames0

hey, i never thought it was too true either, but thats what my 9th grade phys sci teacher told me :p (she was gone the next year)

I'm scared.. http://home.cvc.org/microwaves/eeafs8.htm

Tips On Safe Microwave Oven Operation

* Follow manufacturer's instruction manual for recommended operating procedures and safety precautions.
* Never operate an oven if the door does not close firmly or is bent, warped, or otherwise damaged.
* Never turn the oven on when empty.
* Clean the oven cavity, door, and seals frequently with water and a mild detergent. A special microwave oven cleaner is not necessary. Do not use scouring pads, steel wool, or other abrasives.

Apparently turning it on when empty is dangerous, but they don't say why...

Edit: But wait.. Canada's regulations... http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/phys_agents/microwave_ovens.html

Part III (Microwave Ovens) of the Radiation Emitting Devices Regulation (C.R.C., C. 1370) specifies the following limits for the leakage radiation at 5 cm from the surface of the microwave oven:

* 1.0 mW/cm2 with test load
* 5.0 mW/cm2 without test load
* X-ray exposure not exceeding 0.5 mR (milliroentgen) per hour spread over an area of 10 cm2

I believe a test load is something in the microwave to be heated. Is it safe to assume that microwaves sold in the USA meet Canadian regulations?

I don't think you'll necessarily get burnt from a microwave exposure (at least short enough exposure to know you are being exposed). I think more than likely you will feel some tingling/pain as the water in your cells begins to boil (if there is enough radiation).

Yes and your skin is loaded with water, so your skin will burn first.

So what happens to all that energy that doesn't get absorbed by food when you run an empty microwave?

It doesen't get used and is reflected back into the magnetron; it causes it to heat up.

What if it gets reflected out of the fan holes? Are they small enough that the mesh will block microwaves?
Yes, no microwaves can leave the oven.

Now, if you're talking about electromagnetic radiation from the magnetron and associated electronics, that's a whole 'nother thread. ;) All electronic devices put off some EMR.

Everything puts out EMR.. Even your body puts out EMR. Visible light is a form of EMR. Radiowaves is a form of EMR.

as to the question of where does the energy go when you're not cooking anything:
I believe the metal grating that covers the inside of the microwave door is connect to GROUND, so all the microwaves will hit it and induce an electric current that flows straight to the ground

--but I'm not sure if that's how it works

microwaves transfur their energy to water molecules H2O. if there isnt water in it then the energy stays in the em ray form. basicaly its like asking where all the energy from a flashlight goes.

the grounding may happen w/ the photo-electric effect but im not sure

Is it possible for microwaves to bounce around in the oven and then fly out and burn you when you open the door?

dude, really? I'm totally going to make some energon cubes when i get home.

does anyone else think magnatron would be a really cool name for a dog or a rapper or something?

No, they're gone as soon as the power is turned off.

it makes the inside of the microwave very hot, all surfaces become extremely hot and start to turn brown.

<-------------- did the same thing as op did once but it was for about 10 minutes, not 5...

He probably fried the chip and should RMA it, were you overclocking when you did this? Did you touch the heatsink to see if it was hot after discovering your mistake?

The inside of my microwave wasn't hot though. I opened it and felt around, and it was all just warm. The splatters were just warm also.

I think you are overreacting there. It only causes a short, but powerful EMP.

My dad did this all the time. He'd try to use the timer, but get it wrong and heat up nothing for 5 or 10 minutes.

Good microwaves are protected against just this situation.

The magnetron will just shut down for a while and the oven won't heat anything up.

It will reset itself if you let it sit for a while and it will work fine again.

Microwaves cannot leak out of an oven that is in good condition.

There's not much difference between a single hot dog and nothing. :D

Hm.. If they turn off, that would explain why the microwave wasn't hot.

Edit: On the other hand, they tell you to microwave a utensil for 30 sec - 1 min to determine if it's microwave safe. Shutting off too soon would be bad.
