I ran my second marathon this morning

A fairly small local marathon. I'd say there was probably between 75 and 100 people on the full marathon, but it was hard to tell because of people running the half marathon and 5K.

Link to the run

The results aren't up yet, and my GPS kept losing the satellites, so its data is sketchy at best. I also must have bumped the stop button as well, so its time is several minutes behind my chip time. My chip time was about 4hr7m, which was 6m faster than last year, but above my goal of 3hr59m59s. One of these days I'm going to brake into the 3hr times, its just hard to train properly now between school and work. Best I can do is continue what I've been doing.

I felt really good up until about mile 16, then I started to really feel it. My half marathon time would have been a respectable 1hr45m-ish. Typically, the half marathon is about my limit of running continuously. I can do longer distances, but I have to start taking walking breaks.

Had a lot of fun and met some hard core people out there too. An individual was doing the marathon as her long training run for a 50K next week.

Edit - The extended time without eye drops and the wind really did a number on my LASIK corrected eyes though. My right eye is fine, but the left is having trouble focusing and has kind of a light haze obscuring the vision. If it persists, I'll head to the optometrist's on monday.

The results are up, finally.

On a positive side, my eyes seem to have fully recovered now.

Number one reason why I wear wrap around sunglasses every time I run... rain or shine.

I don't have problems with my eyes, but it gets annoying after a while.

Very, very interesting. My wife is set to run her 3rd (4th?) half-marathon in March and she just had Lasik in December.

Congrats! I'm running my first half-marathon on Sunday; hoping to graduate to the big show either later this year or early next year.

Any tips for a noob?

I don't have a training regimen. I run because I enjoy it, definitely don't want it to become like work.

Hydrate well in the days leading up to the run, hydrate the day prior, bring water with you, take a few snacks or something with you, and do not stand running if you can help it. Stopping to walk will make things hurt more. Also, test the snacks out on a longer run before game time. Race day isn't the time to try something new.

I realize I'm not the OP, but I've ran a couple marathons and plan to run quite a few more, and my training schedule involves at least 6 weeks of just easy running, trying to get the weekly mileage up, then 18 weeks of increasing my long runs from about 14 to 22 miles (usually a long long run every other week with a "medium long" run in between, say, 20, then 16, then 22, then 16 again) and lots of tempo runs (20-45 minutes at "comfortably hard" pace) and Marathon Pace runs (10-16 miles at the mile pace I want to run the marathon in). That's good if you want to hit a specific time (like I did).

If you just want to finish, basically all you gotta do is gradually build your long run up to about 20 miles, run easy on the other days you run, maybe throw in some cross training, and run your last long run about 3 weeks before the race. Then the last 3 weeks are for tapering; gradually lowering your mileage and the workload so you'll be well-rested for the race. PM me if you have any questions. And good luck if you enter the race!

How were the miles between 20 and 26? I am running my first one in May and I have heard that those are the worst. My goal right now is 10 min miles which would put me in around 4:20. Right now I am doing 9 min miles but there is a long way to go still.

What are some of your times for shorter distances?

Thanks for this, I drank like a fish (even more than usual) for the week leading up and I think it helped quite a bit. I also took some energy chew things with me that helped me through the last couple of miles. I did not stop running once and I beat my original goal by over 20 minutes (I finshed in 1:39:39). I just signed up by for my second half-marathon in May with an eye on doing a full one in October.

Any other tips for training or anything? I'm thinking I need to do some exercises for my calves/achilles because that area started to get a little sore by mile 12.

Thanks again.

OP-- That is awesome!! Congratulations on a job well done.

I have never ran a Marathon Race; however I have come close to running marathons. I think my longest is 16 miles just for the heck of it. My half marathon times are ~50 minutes with a loaded back pack right now (Loaded with 5 bottles of water, and first aid items for those who don't run that want to go with me).

One of these days I will bite the bullet and just pump out a marathon (And by that I mean train for it because, though I have never gassed out before on a run without training, an extra 10 miles is sure to break that limit).

The most difficult miles for me were 16 to 19, after that, my snacks hit the blood stream and I was able to finish running the last 6 miles fairly easily. Running into a fairly strong head wind from mile 13 to the end really sapped by strength, but luckily the road curved a bit and most of the headwind was gone after mile 20.

It seems that the later miles see my legs and feet go virtually numb, so long as you continue to run.
