I put Vista on my MSI Wind and... it's fast??

This thread reminded me how much better I like Vista than XP. I always figured the MSI Wind would be too slow for Vista, but I decided to search google and see if anyone has installed it. Well someone posted a review and said it ran great. I was skeptical so I installed Vista Ultimate SP1 on my Wind and sure enough it runs Vista about as well as my Core 2 Duo desktop. WTF BBQ?

I took a video to prove it.

I thought the whole point of putting Windows XP on these things was because the Intel Atom was too slow for Vista.

(BTW, how the hell do I get YouTube to post a video in HD? That video was at 720p but it downscaled it to crappy quality.)

I had it installed stock on my AMD 2.0 ghz, 2gb ram laptop, and was unimpressed.

Ended up going back to xp.

That does seem snappy though. Weird part at 2:00, did you turn on your lights or something?

Do you have an SSD in that thing? It seems oddly fast... I have an MSI Wind with 2GB of RAM and a 7200 RPM HDD running Windows XP SP3 and it doesn't see THAT fast as what you're getting.

No, the screen went black so the camera focused on the background lighting instead.

No, it's the 80GB model with the 6 cell battery. Everything is stock, except for the ram which I upgraded to 2GB for about $15.

On my P4c 2.4Ghz with 1gb of Ram, Vista is faster than XP. At first, I thought it's because of fresh-install-effect but it's still faster even after all the junks are installed.

I think that's because Vista actually runs faster than XP did. Superfetch doing it's job.

My only complaint is boot time. Vista adds about 20 seconds to the bootup time. Not a big deal though. Since you have a faster hard drive than I do, yours would probably boot up much faster.

I'll have to report back later to see if battery life is affected. I've got roughly 5 hours in the past with XP.

Obviously you closed the sidebar.

I disabled Security Center and turned off automatic updates. That's about it.

Hmmm, I may try installing Vista on mine. I never bothered considering it came pre-loaded with XP, but I have an extra copy of Vista laying around that I got free from an ASUS upgrade program.

That's really good for a stock MSI Wind. Did you overclock the processor or strip Vista down with vLite before installing it?

yeah, i have a 1000H, and it still boggles me that it boots up XP faster than my 3.02Ghz P4 (which is admittedly getting dated). The atom is a pretty snappy processor for its clockspeed and power usage. One thing that might be making the difference is hyperthreading on the Atom core.

No, I'm not overclocking and I installed it with a regular Vista SP1 disc.

Yeah, the atom is fast. With regular benchmarks the performance doesn't look so good, but for real world performance it's actually quite fast.

i dunno, it struggles on 720p anime for me.

does just fine on other animes tho.

can confirm the vista fastness on my (now sold) msi wind netbook. i too couldnt believe how much faster it was over xp sp3! which is really weird because i installed a 7200rpm drive and put in 1GB extra for a total of 2GB of ram...honestly, that netbook has run vista perfectly for me. no issues, no slowdowns or anything!
