after much deliberation, research, prowling the forums, and the occasional post, here is what i have ended up with:

case: Thermaltake VA3000 Dream Tower Black Tsunami
PSU: THERMALTAKE W0019+PFC Silent Purepower 480W
mobo: ASUS "K8N-E Deluxe" NVIDIA nForce3 Chipset Motherboard
CPU: AMD athlon 64 3400 newcastle
Ram: Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 1G(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
HDD: Seagate 200GB 7200RPM Barracuda 7200.7 SATA Hard Drive
OPt. NEC 8X Black Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive, Model ND-2510A

a purchased the cpu, psu, hdd and mobo from zipzoomfly (free 2nd day air)
got the case, ram and optical from newegg (zipzoom had the case cheaper but newegg didn't charge me some exhorbatant fee for shipping the case so it was actually cheaper through them and i had a $75 gift certificate for newegg as well).

in about a month i will buy an ati x800xt and my half-life2 machine will be complete (that's not the only reason why i'm building this system but it is a big reason).

once this rig is built, loaded with my files and burned in, my wife will inherit my dell 2.4 gig (i'll keep the 17" lcd until i can afford dell's 20.1" lcd).

i received the tsunami case, the gig of corsair ram, and the nec optical drive (2510a) yesterday. the case is really light, installed the optical drive with thermaltake's snap on drive rails.... easy as pie.

on monday i'll receive the psu, cpu, mobo and hard drive. all this is coming to my job. i will take a camera with me and kinda document the build and post here.
