I present to you...the future of america!

Martin

Lifer
Story is: Miami columnist writes about why kids don't read newspapers, teacher reads column, makes students respond to it.

Just read some of the stuff they wrote. Its...disheartening. I hope Canada's future is brighter...but that may be wishful thinking. 😉

Text

? ''I don't like reading about death, war and government. Write about things that we can relate to.''

? ''Make the newspaper more humorous, it is soooo boring. Talk about skateboarding, it is so huge now you don't even know.''

? ''Talk about not boring stuff. Like the peace thing. It's very important, I understand that. But it's boring.''

? 'Don't use jokes that we don't understand. In your article, you said, 'a much higher percentage than the general population voted for Stalin.' Who is Stalin? Put in jokes kids understand.''

? ''When you talk about this stuff make it interesting. Like when we kill a terrorist, don't just say he died, say he blew up in a million pieces or something like that.''

? ''I think that one way you could improve newspaper sales to young people, would be making the paper look more appealing? Maybe some blue and red ink?

? ''Another thing that would sell good to kids is by typing bigger.''

? ''Another suggestion is to make more comics, like Get Fuzzy. There shouldn't be these stupid comics about the guy who talks about nature, that comic sucks.''

NOthing unusual here, just normal 8th grade self absorbed teenager. They wont even bother to care until they stop living out of their parents wallet.

Nothing to see here, move along.

HAHAHHA

But really I used to hate the news when I was younger as well. Most people grow out of it. I'm a news junky now, although I realize a lot of adults do still hate the news and remain woefully uninformed.

nothing new here, parents have been complaining about kids since the beginning of time, but each generations seems to be able to take care of itself. if not, then we'll have a plague or something.

Thats what I love about capitalism. All these stupid, uneducated suckers buying into their fake paradise of suburbia, fast food, cable TV and Hollywood razzle-dazzle. Never realizing that a few, elite individuals are getting very, very, VERY rich off of their stupidity.

What do you people expect? They are not even done learning history. How can they relate without the proper knowledge? The world does not expect anything from you until you are at least 18, back off. You want to help? Take your George Dubya refund checks and donate them to the schools or better yet volunteer at your local public school.

again explain to me how this is different then it's ever been?

Yep, I hope to one day be one of those individuals 😀

And I definitely ''goofed'' by not explaining, for younger readers, who Stalin is. He is the bass player for Rob Zombie.

I read Dave Barry every monday just to see what he has next - hilarious guy. This was the funniest line, IMO. 😀

That's about what I expect from young punks. Now, if those comments came from adults, then I'd be worried.
Oh I'm sure many adults would say the same thing.

I would wager that no more than 1/4 of the US adult population could pinpoint Iraq on a map if there were not names on the countries. I'm not kidding either.

Same goes for pointing out Canada! 😉

I would be willing to bet that is true for any country.

Hell, it would be a lot less than 25%. I once heard on 60 minutes that only 25% of 12th graders in one study could point out the United States of America!:Q

It's odd but I read the percentage dramatically increases when comparing Lifer's vs. the US adult pop.

😛

You do realize that the writer is Dave Barry, right?

Hello no. I've been to America a couple times and I have to say, the average Joe is a lot dumber then here in Switzerland.

That's odd, I didn't think the Swiss had the backbone to take sides without some sort of monetary return.

no need for flamesuit. The average Joe is pretty dumb. Fortunately, I am the average Jeff, we are much smarter.

I'm only half-Swiss 🙂 Anyway, I think the education in America kinda sux. Although there are top-notch Universities, there are more low-class schools.
