I predict a modern day Exodus from Venezuela

JS80

Lifer
I give it 15 years before Venezuela is completely in ruins and there is another revolution.
Chavez begins to ruin his country.

Chavez also alluded to Jesus, saying: "I swear by Christ ? the greatest socialist in history."
😕 WTF
He said a commission was being formed to oversee proposed constitutional reforms, including one that would allow "indefinite re-election" by doing away with presidential term limits that bar him from running again in 2012.
Translation: he's working on becoming dictator of Venezuela.
With oil profits booming and his popularity high, Chavez seems to be in step with many Venezuelans even as spooked investors rushed to sell off Venezuelan stocks in the affected companies after his nationalization announcement Monday.
First elected in 1998, Chavez has cemented his popularity by using a bonanza in oil profits to set up state-funded cooperatives and fund social programs from subsidized grocery stores to free universities.
It will be a rude awakening when oil profits dry up.
"They want to nationalize everything. This is the beginning," said Marisela Leon, a 47-year-old engineer who said she might consider leaving the country because she sees difficult times ahead.
In other news, Venezuela no longer has engineers in it's population...
But most of Chavez's largely poor supporters remain optimistic. Miguel Angel Martinez, a 52-year-old street vendor, said the president "has dedicated himself to studying communist, socialist and democratic models and has taken the best of those models."

Orlando Vera, a 63-year-old window washer, said nationalization makes sense for companies that serve the public interest. "Everything the man is doing is good," he said, adding that his economic situation has improved under the Venezuelan leader.
...and only street vendors and window washers are left.

How is the U.S. any different?

We're working hard on making sure there will only be window washers and street vendors here too so what's the difference who the "leader" is?

the oil companies should take their ball and go home. and then we'd see how fscked he really is.

unfortunately the chinese would probably bail him out. :disgust:

So you think a forum with news in it has no commentary at all? What would be the point? Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

He posted in here because he can't take the heat in the kitchen.

I totally agree. Even the Economist have a bleak outlook on Venezuela. Really, Chavez does not realize that he is driving away foreign investors. He already drove away the American owner of a big electricity provider in Venezuela by nationalizing that industry. He's also doing the same thing for the telecommunications industry.

Chavez thinks he can change Venezuela. But he doesn't realize that in order to change Venezuela he has to change himself.

It sounds like Chavez is restructuring the organization of the country so that more working people can benefit from the vast oil revenues coming into the country. I think that's better than allowing a couple of lucky domestic or international investors to hoard all of the profits for themselves.

Isn't that what happens in other oil-rich nations like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia where the vast majority of the populations are left poor while a few thousand members of the royal family take all of the wealth? At least Chavez is taking action to help improve the quality of life for the greatest number of his people. I think he's courageous for trying out a different way of governing than what leaders in some other oil-rich nations are doing.
