I have never had a problem with the sales people at the Fry's by my house. And I have never bought anything that was open-box without my knowing.

I live on the East Coast but travel all the time for work. When I was in Mountain View recently I drove up 101 (why do all CA people call it "the" 101 or "the" whatever) and hit the Fry's there. I was the envy of all my geek friends back home for simply having step foot in the building. It was a magical experience.

Outpost usually doesn't beat other online stores, but Frys is about the same as online stores, since for reasonably small purchases tax ~ shipping. When I need something quick, Fry's is the ultimate resource. Plus, I'm not sure if Fry's being in state would mean you had to pay tax on outpost.

Socal-ers call it "the" 101. Norcal natives don't. Although, sadly, the horror of the Socal way seems to be creeping in up here more and more.

Fry's is handy when you want something quickly because as people have pointed out, it has a lot of stuff in stock. Other than that, it's your typical warehouse store with annoying salespeople. On balance I like having it available.

I have a Fry's 5mins away, it's an OK place for software, cables and gadgets but I will never buy components there again I built a computer for a friend with parts from there a couple of years ago, and within 3mos I had RMA'd and replaced damn near every single component that we bought there

Open box is clearly labeled. The fact that there is a lax return policy like Costco makes Fry's the ideal choice. When Seagate refused to give me an advanced RMA for my 250GB hard drive, I had no choice but to buy a HD at Fry's and later return it. Yea have fun with BB and CC's 15% restocking fees, whereas Fry's just asks no questions. How about when I tested 2 x Samsung 930Bs and finally decided to gamble and buy a Viewsonic at ZZF? Couldn't have done it without Fry's no questions-asked return policy where I just said I don't like the damn monitor and they took my 930B back.

So I compare Fry's to Newegg. It pretty much has everything there, although the Egg has more. Prices aren't the same, but Fry's is definitely on the cheapside when compared to other B&Ms. The selection is just great and BB and CC and Micro Center can't even compare.

Oh and about the cables? My friend just went to Fry's on Sunday to grab an S-Video cable and audio jack -> RCA cable for a total of $6. The same cables would've cost us $45 at BB.. ROFL.

I long for a Fry's here in Charlotte. I think the closest is in Atlanta. I'd gladly trade back the Anchor Bar and Trader Joe's we are acquiring for a Fry's. I'll even toss in the NASCAR Hall of Fame for one.
