What kind of metal does it appear to be? What characteristics does it have? From the picture it looks yellowish

It is a yellowish looking color. There is some writing on the inside band but I cant make it out. My house is old so I am hoping there is all kinds of old stuff in my yard

Okay... how about $25? Everything in this world has a price. What is your price for the ring?

Don't listen to theplaidfad, he's well known among the mods as a troll.

Now, I will give you $30 for it.

bite it.

...i'm not sure what that does, but i've seen people do it.

it's probably just brass, but if in doubt i'm sure a jewler can tell you in a few seconds. or for shits and giggles you could weight it and find the volume (graduated cylinder and some water works). differing densities would probably allow you to rule out gold.

Que the media! Let the frenzy begin. What happened to the little blond girl who owned that ring? SAWYER what are you hiding? Do you live near a tropical beach? Nancy Grace where are youuuu!

Pretty cool. 🙂 I had a kiddy metal detector when I was a kid. I never found anything cool.

It would be neat to revisit the hobby.

OP, it's called a "signet ring":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_%28emblem)#Signet_rings

The letter on there is a script "T" as you can see here:
http://www.sorellajewelry.com/product-p/ss-rmf02.htm

In the old days, people would wear these things w/a coat of arms or other symbol unique to them to stamp wax seals. Since this one just has a single/standard script letter on it, I'm guessing it's not that old. But that's purely a guess from googling.

But, I would strongly suggest against selling it for $20. Looking online, these things seem to usually be made of some kind of silver/gold; this clearly isn't silver so... Even if it's 14 karat, the gold is worth more than that. A jeweler can tell you.

edit: also that's a really cool find. Wonder how it ended up lost in your yard.

Fine... he's correct.

I'll bump my offer up to $150.

If it's 14k gold & the thing next to it is a penny, then this seems pretty reasonable (could even be high) to me just going on value of (melted down) gold alone. Not so good of an offer if it's more than 14k though. But I must be missing something; if theplaidfad is serious, then he's almost surely offering you less than he thinks it's worth?

were these signets cast? because i definitely see big casting lines and and a rough surface on top.

i would have figured the face on something like that would be struck like a coin.

edit- looked at picture closer, actually it's cast and then the top is engraved. you can see the displaced material around the edges.

OP, I sent you another PM. That particular ring looks like it could be very important to me. I'm calling you out here.... I'm throwing $250 out there at you.

Don't walk away from this man.
