Give the guy a break, he's working on a budget. Who really cares if the center stone is a diamond? If his fiancee-to-be likes it, that's all that matters

Very true, I have seen people buy sh!t from Kay or others and be happy with it. I am going with an independent jeweler who will make mine from scratch for a very reasonable price.

Engagement Rings are over rated. Buy her a $300.00-$500.00 ring and buy yourself a new PC and gun. God knows your going to need both in a few months!

Necine, I'm assuming that's her birthstone? SO you're planning on asking her on her birthday? I think it's beautiful. If she'll like it and you can afford it, then it's perfect.

White Clear Diamonds are not the most expenisve variety. Natural Blue diamonds are far more valuable.

This is true. A FVB (Fancy Vivid Blue) or FVP (Pink) diamond can have a Tag price per carat of around $1 million. Of course, this is mostly due to the rarity and the fact that there is no price guide published to set the prices on a monthly basis. The best white diamonds rarely go above $200K/ct.

Minendo. 4k is 4 karat. Not $4,000. When you said 4c, that is incorrect.

What I was saying is that a 1-2 karat diamond is perfect, platinum set of course.

When he said 4c's, what he meant where the four variables in buying diamonds

Cut
Clarity
Color
Carats

These are the four most important attributes in determining a diamonds value

Any diamond/gem experts? Worth the price?

Center stone is a pink sapphire.

Change out the center stone. Isn't engagement rings supposed to have white diamonds?

Not exactly. It's really whatever the misses likes. However, most people get an engagement ring to match the wedding ring so they can be soldered together. Rings of that nature that the OP wants to buy most likely cannot.

To be honest that ring is more geared to a promise ring of some sort or just a nice gift. If you haven't bought a promise ring but would like to of that nature, then go for something cheaper with the same stone.

Look on the tag 😉

Actually the best thing to do is go to the jewelry store. They usually have little plastic sizers you can have for free. Slip one on in the middle of the night to do the fit check.

Real love doesn't require expensive stuff. My wife and I got each other nice, simple platinum rings for about $400 total...no diamonds, etc. We're gonna be together forever, no doubt. Also, for Valentine's Day, I'll prolly just write her a nice love note.

I think you need to do a little more digging into to what your woman likes. Here's an idea:

Go someplace with her where there "happens" to be jewelry (department store, etc). Then pick out the gaudiest, ugliest ring you see (doesn't have to be engagement) and point to it and say something like "Oooo- I know what someone's getting for Xmas!".

This will invariably lead the woman to start commenting about the ring, and what she likes, doesn't like, etc. This is almost foolproof.

Another idea is to pretend you are interested in buying a ring (if you're like that). You can ask the person behind the counter to size your finger. This should inevitably lead to your woman getting sized, or telling you her size.

It really doesn't take much effort, just a little subtlety. Every woman I ever dated would always find some excuse to explain to me why some rings were better than others, and what type of ring she wanted. I think it's in their BIOS.

Side stones are too much and pink diamond = crap. If you plan buying a real diamond make the investment worthwhile (4c's) otherwise try your luck at the quarter machine in your local Walmart.

The pink stone is not a diamond. As for your 4k idea ... get real.

A 1-2k ring is fine. I prefer platinum set though.

$1500 is my max. I can get a platinum set and a decent diamond with 1500?

No you really can't.... You could only get a very small diamond for 1500 with a gold setting. Don't listen to the braggarts and their inside info... just go to www.pricescope.com

you'll find all your answers there.

This man knows what he's talking about. Pricescope will teach you way beyond the 4c's. Learn about Sarin reports and idealscope images, etc.- these things will let you compare how brilliant your diamond will be compared to other diamonds. Don't be afraid to use the forums there to ask questions, most posters there know what they are talking about.

Also, a synopsis of what the pricescope forums will tell you regarding online retailers: Bluenile is decent for quality and service, but you can get the same (if not better) at a better price at whiteflash.com

uniondiamond.com is decent as well.

DING DING DING!!

Pricescope.com FTW

If you are looking for information on diamonds, Pricescope is THE place to go. There are so many people there and many of them are in the industry and KNOW their stuff.

I've been going there for about 2.5 years now and I have learned so much. You'll be glad you went.

Agreed. If you are looking for diamonds, pricescope is the first stop. I started my research there, and ended up buying an ideal scope, loupe, etc.

Also, OP, if you are considering platinum, you may want to step down to white gold. Looks the same, and gold is more durable (and can be refinished very easily). I still ended up getting a platinum band, but it is more beaten up from everyday wear than a comparable 14k band would be.

Unless you have some special inside information, I'd take any claims by a dealer of a diamonds origin with a grain of salt. A diamond passes through too many hands on the way to you and there is just not any real incentive to guarantee a diamonds origin.

but, but the kimberly process... yeah, i didn't buy into it either. there're always synthetic diamonds

I think it's a very pretty ring. Whether it would be a good engagement ring or not depends on how much of a traditionalist your girlfriend is.

I'd love getting that ring as a gift, but not as an engagement ring. I'm old and very traditional though.

If you think she'd like that type of ring for the occasion then go for it, but if you have any doubts, it might be better to go the traditional route.

Good luck to the two of you!

P.S. Do you ever show her any threads like this and ask her what she'd say about them? If so, I'll make a thread asking if that ring would make a good engagement ring and post the link to the pic so you can show it to her.

On second thought, that probably wouldn't work. Most likely someone would post in it asking, "Isn't that the exact same ring that necine got for an engagement ring?" 🙂

Lol... it's a pink sapphire. It's not really an engagement ring.

Well then, it's not really an engagement.

Lmao, go watch some debeers commercials.

Engagement rings cost that much? yikes. If I ever pop the question she is just going to live with a plastic ring I win from one of those machines you find at grocery stores. After all its not the money she should want. I don't want a gold digger 🙂

Didn't you say you're not allowed to even date her because she belongs to some crazy religion that doesn't accept converts?
 Then again, you must have the wrong person. No one could be that desperate. Right necine?

Engagement rings come in various price range depending on the diamond itself and the material from the band. When I proposed to my wife I did not offer her a ring right away but instead we both went in to a diamond broker and she picked out what she wanted. The ring that she has was pretty much custom made. Maybe that was a mistake because it ended up being around 5,000 to 6,000 dollars. It was a 1.07 carat center stone plus 4 other smaller side stones that had total weight of .58 or something like that. The color of the diamond was and E class which is colorless, vs1 or vs2, I don't remember. My wallet and I cried that night and many more days following that purchase. Anyway, enough about my wife and my broke ass wallet. The point that I'm trying to make is that sometimes it's better to have your fiance/girlfriend pick it because it's something that she'll like and something that she'll wear for a long time. I can tell you straight out that sometimes men do not have the best taste in fashion and this is something that's too expensive to mess up.
