I paid $70 for labor alone to change rear brakes...

1. I changed BRAKES FOR the front axles myself.
2. The rears were very tricky. I brought it in to a mechanic. I SUPPLIED my own parts and asked him how much for labor alone. He said $70.

This is for changing disc brakes ONLY! No need to change axle/rotors/shims/etc..

I was like WTF. But I had no choice since brakes were wearing down REALLY badly.

Was that a rip off? I supplied my own brakes. They were $15 per axle. My car is 2003 Mazda 6.

Big chains like Midas or Meineke refused to install using my own parts...

You changed the axles or brakes? Was it just the brake pads or rotors too?

Just disc pads. No rotor or axle change needed.

Considering a mechanic's hourly rate is between $60-$80/hour...you did fine

plus you didn't have to get dirty...

Everyone has to make a living. If you don't like paying that much, learn how to change the rear brakes yourself.

I don't see how the back could be any more tricky than the front if they are both disc brakes.

Depends on the parking brake mechanism. If it uses the disc for parking too, it is more complex. Our pilot for example has a set of drums built right in to the rear disc, so the disc brake is unencumbered by the parking brake.

Yeah I had to do new rotors and pads on my rear brakes of my last car... the parking brake was a huuuge pain.

that was a fair price. many mechanics charge more than that per hour, and no shop is going to charge less than one hour, especially when they have to put the car on a lift.

I've done my own brakes, both front & rear Drum & Disc, all of my life.
I would have to think twice before doing someone else's back brakes for $70.00! (Especially Disc)
You did alright.

I did your wife for only $70, now that was a deal 😛 j/k j/k!

1hour minimum at most places I've been to. Unless you know the mechanic and he works on your vehicle exclusively that's standard pricing.

I thought people say brake pads are easy? What was so tricky about it?
