I ordered a *new* Intel DG965WH motherboard from ebay and now it no worky

I ordered a combo deal off ebay. It is a Core 2 Duo E6300 and a Intel DG965WH motherboard. Both items were still in their original packaging, so as the seller said, they should be brand new.

I've had it less than a week and now whenever powered is applied to the motherboard, it emits a high-pitched squeak. It doesn't matter if the computer is powered on or not, even if the computer is off, but with power going to it from the power supply then it emits this squeak. Also ever since it started this squeak, the short time I can stand to use it, the sound is getting progressively more and more staticy.

So anyway, my question is there anything I can do to get this repair under the Intel warranty? Should I go straight to Intel and tell them I bought it on ebay? Or do I need to go through the seller, or through ebay? I need guidance. Thanks.
 
contact intel regarding thier RMA policy. The thing should be under warranty. BUt not sure of thier policy.
 
I doubt the warranty is transferrable, if they somehow exchange it without a retail reciept you will be good to go. Otherwise, you are stuck unless the seller is charitable.

hmmm, does anybody know, if I told Intel that I bought it on ebay, would they automatically invalidate the warranty or would they still honor it? Or should I just keep that information to myself?

Keep it to yourself. WOrst case scenerio you would RMA it under the sellers credentials. He would have to work with you on it. If it is the retail version it has a 3 year warranty.
 
Contact EBAY and tell them the stuff you bought does not work and you want a refund....
Just do it.
No..... if ...ands..or buts....Do it now.
 
PLease contact the seller the first. I hate people who automatically go to Ebay or Pay pal without first informing the seller of the problem and giving them a chance to fix it.

IF the seller wont work with you, then go to Ebay and Paypal (assuming you paid with Paypal)


But please, contact the seller first. That is proper Ebay etiquette.

Generally, a high pitched squeal will not be from the Motherboard itself,
but usually from a Defective Power Supply .. they run at about 40Khz
which is used so transformers and filter capacitors can be smaller.

I would swap the power supply first. If still the same, then it may be
a bad mobo. At least your ebay seller has a good feedback rating
Nothing bad posted so one way or the other, you should be able to
come to terms as to a swap if needed
 
Well, I did contact the seller first and he was very cooperative. He went ahead and emailed his order information and then I contacted Intel, however, as it turned out, I didn't even need any info from him. All Intel wanted is the SN # and AA # and they set me up with an RMA. I've UPS'd them my mobo and am just waiting for them to get it now.

oh crap, you are right. Luckily the box hasn't been picked up yet. Oh man, before contacting Intel I tried unplugging the power supply and powering on just the power supply and it didn't make the noise didn't show up.

After reading you post, I decided to try it again and THIS time the noise showed up (it's been getting progressively worse, it used to only be sporatic). Dang, good call bruceb, you just saved me bunch of headache :beer:

Good insight due to troubleshooting many VCR's and TV Sets where the symptom of a bad power supply
is the same ... a high pitched squeal

I have everything put back together with a temporary PSU and all is good. Unfortunately, this PSU came with the case (Antec) and Newegg wants the whole case and PSU in order to RMA it. So now I have to decide if it is worth the trouble of transfering everything to a temporary case 🙁
