I only joined this website because

Back in the day, I'd switch my browser to anandtech.com when someone walked by so they wouldn't catch me looking at porn. :sneaky:

What's your story?

I was working 3rd shifts as a help desk person. Only person on the entire floor of a building that took up a city block. Back in 1998 it was was one of the few boards that had any sort of overnight activity to keep you occupied.

Didn't hurt that it was a tech site and not as awkard to explain while working in IT.

I was building a computer and needed help. I didn't touch the social forums for years

Yep, same here. Was active in Video the most starting out, which kind of boggles my mind considering my distaste for that forum now. D:

I have never looked at porn on the job, I had other things to do when I joined AT. I wanted help with technical issues... specifically, I don't recall. It's very wide ranging here, and there's a lot of expert information, many experts have a presence here, and in general people pride themselves on being knowledgeable. Now, this forum often not so much!

One of my current projects is to rebuild my main desktop, new mobo, CPU, memory, maybe keep the case, PSU, some of the PCI cards. I'm way overdue for an upgrade, but nothing has pushed me to the "I have to do it now" point. I'm going to post in either the Motherboards or General Hardware forums, maybe both, in that order. Have to start with the motherboard, obviously.

I thought people in the tech industry would be smarter and that it would be better than forums with the general population.

At least it's more entertaining, most of the time.

Wanted to build a computer, found MechBgon's tutorial here and I've been hanging out ever since.

I was in high school (around 1997-1998 I think) and was working on building my first computer. I had discovered that there were websites dedicated to reviewing computer hardware. Anandtech was the site that seemed to provide the most comprehensive reviews on the stuff I was looking for at the time, so I spent a lot of time here. I didn't know what a forum was really so it never occurred to me to ask for help, but I did run across mechBgon's guide to building your first PC from parts : ) somehow, which was a great help to me back then. Several years and many PCs later I happened across the forums and joined up.

I was reading articles on anandech.com back when it was on geocities. I joined the forums in 99 when I was interested in buying some used parts on the fs/ft forums.

I lurked here for about a year before a member inquired if there were flights from Trinidad to Tobago because they did not want to take the ferry. I pointed them to right right place and they had a good time. 🙂

Building a computer, went OCD, thought I forgot to remove a plastic wrapper sealing the thermal paste for a heat-sink, wanted to know if I did...

needed help building a pc. A wife and 3 kids later the tech life is over as my post count shows. I do lurk once in a while to get a feel of the good old days 🙁
