I doubt that his dad's friend would've ripped him off. I personally think it is your lack of knowledge that makes it appear that way.

the brand on the cdrw = "Just Link"
the dvd is the same
and the monitor is "ADI"

ive just never heard of them....

Isn't "Just Link" what Acer/AOpen calls their burn proof technology? So I think they're Acer/AOpen drives.

Nasty, PCChips mobo. I wouldn't be surprised if the mobo tends to crash a lot or act unstable. Even worse than using a sucky video card (*cough* Xabre) IMHO.

Radeon 9100 and 8RDA+ are inexpensive items that owns those parts :)

athlon xp 2400 $70
80 gig $80
floppy $10
512 pc-2100 $70
no name DVD drive $25
no name 52*32*52 $35
cheapo PC chips MOBO $40
xabre 200 video card $20
generic black keyboard/mouse $20
a cheapo evercase $50
15" no name LCD $200
lexmark printer $30

total cost -- $1130.30 Real Cost For Parts Only = $650 That is a conservative estimate for parts. You could knock off another $100-$150 if you look in Hot Deals for parts.

Add an OS, time to build and test, and a little extra for profit, and $900 seems like a fair cost for everything. He got taken for at least $200, possibly a lot more if you look at some of the hot PC/LCD combo deals Dell has been offering lately. Your friend is a sucker, make sure you tell him to read this post.

i think he got totally ripped, but thats just my opinion.[/quote]

He does list the brands in a later post, but sometimes it is impossible to find out the brand. I've been handed motherboards, CD-ROM drives, and other components where there is no brand listed anywhere on the device (other than on the chips). The manual will say something like "Motherboard" on the front cover and won't list any tech-support numbers or even an address anywhere in it. When handed one of these the first thing I ask is if there is any way the person can return it. If the company doesn't even want to put their name on it, what does that say about the quality.

I doubt that his dad's friend would've ripped him off. I personally think it is your lack of knowledge that makes it appear that way.

My gf's uncle in law was the tech support for the family until I started helping them. He didn't intentionally rip them off, but he sure has done some really stupid things. They still call him first sometimes until he suggests an expensive solution. Recently he couldn't get a hard drive working in an older system (wouldn't recognize it), he said the motherboard needed to be replaced, and thus they would need a new CPU, memory, and video card. It turned out all that was needed was a BIOS update. Even if there was no BIOS update available, worst case you need a PCI IDE controller.

I loaned my laptop to his wife and my gf's mom for a trip, and set it up so that they just needed to enter a local phone number for their ISP. He told them Earthlink required software to run on laptops. It didn't.

It's amazing that this guy has been a system administrator for like 15 years, a little longer than I've been doing it off and on for. It's not amazing that he was laid off, although that may be a bit cruel. His solution is attempting to get Microsoft and Cisco certification.

Was a licensed copy of Windows included too? That would add to the cost too.

If your a student (college) you can usually get student copies @ $100 for "pro" but I recently found that at UAB(University of Alabama in Birmingham) you can purchase a legal "student distribution" copy for $6.25! I didnt believe it, but I've seen the copies, they come sealed in a plastic sleave, and limit each student to 2 copies of each (XP pro and XP office).

Student licensing rules.

I paid about CDN$25 and got XP Pro (Corp), Office XP, Studio MX, and Norton Corporate.

But I doubt the dude that built the computer has access to those student copies. At my school, British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), we got WinXP Pro, Office XP w/FP, VS.NET, Visio, Project and some other stuff for $150 CAD (~100 USD).

lol he wont have to worry about bluring in gaming. Since the video card cant give the LCD frames faster than the LCD's response time.

If he's a really good friend, make fun of him as much as possible.
Otherwise, you've got to live with him, so don't piss him off.

Personally, I only build/help if it's a close friend. Then if I have to help him out after the fact, it's actually kinda fun to hang out and try to fix the damn thing.

I almost built a new system for my parents, but after thinking about how many times they had called me to ask how to uninstall a program or how to copy a file to the CD-R on their old Compaq, I told them to buy a Dell and get the 3 year warranty and support deal.

College deals are great. My local community college has a deal with MS to get FREE programs. Visual Studio.NET, Office XP Pro, Windows XP Pro, Win2k Pro, Win98, pretty much ALL of the goodies :D The only thing they dont offer is Win2003 Server, which I wanted. But I can't be picky, now can I? My old college, Univ. at Buffalo, had a similar deal. Unlike my community college, UB gave out the actual cd's w/out manuals. My community college just has a deal to freely distribute it, so they go the cheapy way and make you bring your own cd-r, make a dupe, then give you a valid student's registration key. It's ghetto, but its free. And as you know, students LOVE anything free.

Case in point: your roomie got ch0wned. it happens. dont bring it up, just make fun of him indirectly, ie: owning him in every game out there ;x

When I was getting my degree my college had a similar program, but I signed up and got an automated "you should receive your account information within 24 hours from Microsoft, regarding your enrollment" and never got another response. Tried signing up a month later, and another month later but didn't even get another automated response. No idea if it was my school or if Microsoft just doesn't like me, if the latter the feeling is mutual (That doesn't mean I wouldn't accept free Microsoft software, I just spend as little as possible on it).
