I/O shield purpose

Is there a purpose for an I/O shield for the back of the case? I have seem to lost mine, and I am wondering if I need to buy a new case because of that. I heard that it is for some kind of electrical shielding, but I want to make sure. Thanks in advance.

The i/o shield helps keep electro-magnetic signals inside the computer case, and helps secure the motherboard interface terminals to the case, it provides stress-relief for the connectors.

While not absolutely necessary, it is a good idea to have it. Contact the case manufacturer for a new one, or poke around a used computer place. Might get lucky and find one that fits.
