Well, a year ago the microdrive was included in MP3 players for $200. It's not inconceivable that it would have dropped in price over time.

It's a 4200 rpm microdrive. It also has an overheating problem. Do some google searching for this and you'll see it mentioned quite a bit. We're talking really hot. Could be bad for long term durability. Decent transfer rates though and you gotta love the 4GB's of space! Also, They've apparently just released a 6GB model (last month). Might be why this one is hitting some stores at a lower price now.

yup, they do!

and besides the 12% instore coupon, there's also a - $15.00 off $100.00 coupon code if you buy this online, to make it $ $84.94 after rebates, including free shipping.

i know coupon codes aren't allowed on this site, so how do i share this info? thanks!

This unit has a 1" microdive in it. I have the 2.2 GB model by Emprex. The Emprex models and the IOMagic models are the same. Mine can be bought at Fry's when it's on sale for 69.00. The 4 GB model has been as low as 119 OTD if I remember correctly. I bought mine in Dec 2004 for 79.00 and it's been great. Just as fast as my Memorex TravelDrive and my Sandisk MicroCruzer.

I googled as you said and the problems I seemed to have found are the microdrives that are used as CFII cards for cameras. I couldn't find anything related to these portable USB 2.0 drive. The drives that are in these USB 2.0 units are enclosed by aluminum cases so I think the heating problem doesn't exist like in the CFII cards. My drives when going full bore, only gets warm and that's it. I've never had a problem with it getting hot.

If you find something about these drives overheating, please post.

It took all of five minutes. These were all comments on the 4GB drive mentioned in this sale:

From Circuit City:
?Its ok until you start using large files on gigabank then it gets BOILING HOT ! and sometimes freeze on you?

From Amazon.com:
?In my opinion the thing runs way, way hot and thats why the disk failed
Case in point: after working on a MS word doc with auto save set to 5 min intervals for several hours the unit was almost too hot to touch.?

?I consider this pure junk.?

From CNET Shopper:
?Who knows how long the hardrive will last in it. Wouldn't count on it for longterm data storage. Gets a little warm..?

?When it get hot all the features is messed up. It getting very slow and make the computer hybernate(hang). Become really really hotttttt?

?During the transfer (read or write), the unit heats up quite a lot....?

?Crashes during large data transfers and loses data all the time. Don't rely on this unit for sensitive information storage!!!!?

There's probably more out there. However, I stress again that you can find these quite easily, if you look.
I'm not saying this is a reason NOT to buy this. As I pointed out, this is just a problem I've seen mentioned quite a bit. Hell, I've got a "regular" HDD that heats up too. Just be aware when you buy!

Gee could you tell me a third time!. Maybe make the bold a little bit bolder so I and other don't miss it. I looked, didn't find (my fault, I looked under portable micro drives); and asked nicely, no need to be condescending.

Jusr bought it (couldn't resist the possiblity of getting a 4 gig microdrive for $90) and took it apart. Bad news - it obviously is a microdrive, but not the Hitachi, which works with all digital cameras that support CF Type II. It's a Magicstor; my el cheapo card reader recognizes it, but it wouldn't work with the Digital Rebel. Looks like I ended up with a very expensive 4 gig storage device. Bleh...

In my first post I said these were easily found if you "do a google search for this" (bold added here for emphasis); not a search for "microdrives". Then you said, "I think the heating problem doesn't exist". I had just politely posted about the heating problem and told you how to find it and you said it "doesn't exist". I wasn't being condescending, . . . . more like impatient.
Sorry, but you made it plain that you couldn't find anything about this drive, thought I must have meant some other drive and asked that I post anything I found. So I went back and did the same google search, copied and pasted each quote and made sure to list the site they were found, less there be any confusion. That was exactly what I was hoping to let others do for themselves with my original post; a common practice here. So yeah, I might have been impatient. The bolded phrase in my post was done so to emphasize that my search was done on this drive; not a CFII or other microdrive as I suspected you had. Apparently it worked as you realized the error in your ways of searching. Again, if you are a little thin skinned and took offense, it wasn't meant that way. But I ask that you take a bit more care in your searches before you post that something doesn't exist. Or perhaps you should simply post that you need help finding something that was mentioned. That would probably assist in the communications.

"That was exactly what I was hoping to let others do for themselves with my original post; a common practice here."

Actually, that's not true. The common practice around these forums is to post information we find and links if possible on the subjects discussed, not to make others people find it for themselves. If I have some information on the subject thread, I will always post it plus a link if possible as do many others that post in these forums. That kind of courtesy is what's appreciated around these forums .

Sorry to hear that, but thanks for being the guinea pig. The Magicstore, at least the 2.2 gig version, is notoriously unreliable.

Just saw the 2.2 gig microdrive thread - well heck, maybe should just pop the damn thing back in its casing and take it back to the store. I don't like the idea of paying this much money for what essentially is a nonworking piece of junk. The overheating rumors weren't just rumors...

I strongly dissagree with that assumption. It is VERY common, when info is readily available via Google to state just that, and let others do their own research and/or find out for themselves. Yes, if it is something not in the mainstream that might be difficult to find, then it is a common courtesy to post a link. This was not the case. All of those user opinions on this specific drive were found in the first two pages (almost all on the first page) of a google search. If someone can't find that and need a link posted to something so easily found, they need more than just a hot deal.
Would you have someone post a half dozen links to those opinions and then perhaps another half dozen to opposing opinions?? Where does it end? ALL of that was readily available and I stated it as such. The fact that you couldn't find something doesn't mean there should have been a link posted to it. Sooner or later you have to be able to do things yourself.
Our discussion should end as it has no further bearing on this product in a Hot Deal thread. If you wish to continue the discussion, feel free to PM me.

If you want your diatribe to end fine, don't respond to my comments. It may be common for you to let people find their own info after you already have that particular info, but I am talking about this forum, nothing else. It is NOT VERY common around here. Most everyone here with a modicum of courtesy will post info and/or links to subject matter within the thread.

You might think you're "teaching people" to find things for themselves but this is a forum where we share information, and answer each others questions. And yes, I would actually want people to post links pro and con, as I am sure many others would appreciate the links available to them. Why would anyone want to search info on a subject that someone else has already found. It's time saving at the least and it's then the choice of the person reading whether or not he/she want to further read up. Why reinvent the wheel?

Trust me, Anantechers appreciate links to info and posting of info itself. If you don't, tough, I really could give a hairy rat's ass if you don't care for my opinion.

The reality of this is I made a search error and I asked for a post. I didn't think that I would end up getting into a disaggrement with a condescending asshat. Yes, you are again talking down to me. I don't appreciate it in the least. I am quite capable of doing things for myself, so enough of the condescending remarks such as:
"Sooner or later you have to be able to do things yourself". You really don't have a clue.

For those wanting to buy this for its intended purposes, you'd be much better off getting a 5 gig Seagate Pocket Drive at Best Buy.
