Hi guys,
I bought a 1TB seagate 2 weeks ago, a few days ago for some stupid reason i pulled the sata plug while the pc was on.
since then, whenever my pc boots with the mentioned hdd hooked it becomes painfully slow (pressing the start button takes 5 minutes literally).:(
i can see the partitions of the hdd and their names in windows explorer but when i click on them it gives me an i/o error.

i tried recovering my data using getdataback but it keeps giving me a (block cannot be read error) on all blocks ... after 19 hours i gave up.

i also tried spinrite, and it didnt work either... it was stuck at 0.01% for 4 hours .

so is there a way to get my data from this hdd ? or did it eat my stuff and digest it ?

Today i have tried mounting the volumes in knoppix 5.1 live , but it didnt work either ... it gave me an internal/external error could not mount volume, please run chkdsk on windows.
I tried running chkdsk /f but it gave me the error (could not open volume for direct access) , same thing with format /q .

What is really strange is that i can see the partitions in windows explorer and even the folders , but when i click on any folder it gives me the horrible (i/o device error) !!!

Do you have another system available to hook this drive into? By sata or USB adapter?

Format /q ??? Chkdsk /f ???

You are really determined to lose that data.

Performing WRITE commands on a messed-up hard drive is a really bad idea. I don't know how to repair it at this point. If the data is valuable, I suggest a reputable data recovery house. And don't perform any more write operations on the drive.

I am really that desperate, ive tried everything in the world and figured formatting would make my system able to read the harddisk. i could then use a recovery program to extract what is left of the data.

SpinRite 6.0

Stolen from Blain in the General Hardware forum. I haven't used it but it certainly looks interesting.

So the drive shows up fine in BIOS but you cannot boot from it or access it in Windows (on another system), correct?

Can you get onto it in the Recovery Console? Is so, run fixmbr and then fixboot in that order and then reboot. You then probably want to run chkdsk /r to fix any disk errors.

FixMBR is the one other possibility, but I hesitate to recommend it because I would have expected GetDataBack to be able to see that problem and work around it. But, hey....

It does seem likely, though, that pulling the data cable on a drive would result in scrambling the MBR and would be unlikely to do any major damage to the main data portion of the hard drive.
