Just bought this. I linked my google voice account to it and now anyone who calls my google voice number rings my phone and i can call out for free. I don't have to pay for a hard landline service OR VOIP service, as long as google voice remains free. This is so damn awesome :awe:

GREATEST INVENTION EVER.

Edit: I don't think it has 911 though (google voice doesn't provide it)

Edit 2: Some youtubes on the device:

You can setup a SIP Provider, Google Voice, Hard landline, and some other stuff like using an Obi to Obi as a bridge... but i prefer google voice for free obviously :awe:

Edit 2: It also has an iphone/android app to do wifi calling

Edit 3: Looks like you can have 2 or 3 numbers associated with the device too

VoIP != landline. And, no, it wouldn't do 911 if your provider didn't do 911.

This is no different than any other ATA, except that it supports Google Voice.

Yeah, messed that title up, in any case, the google voice support is what makes it HUGE...that's how i get free calling from this device... actually i think i could get 911 service (maybe even by itself) from a VOIP provider.

Yeah... my alarm is plugged into my phone system (FIOS). I would love to get this device. The ROI would be quite short...

I'm not qualified to say... you'd probably have to ask http://www.obitalk.com ... they have a support forum

I'm not sure i would trust either landline or VOIP for security anyway, i'd go with cellular

I will contact them thanks. I'd prefer cellular too but I'm good with VOIP. Keeps all but the most intent criminals at bay. That's an interesting question though I wonder how long ADT's heartbeat is I'm going to ask them next time I get the chance.

I got one too a few months ago. It works great. Even correctly notifies my home phone when google voice has a voicemail.

For 911 service, probably your best idea is to set it up so when you dial 911 it instead dials the local police department number (which should be easy to find). Not the best solution, but it will work well enough.

It really is a great device, totally free calling and the call quality has been fine so far (a few delay issues once in a while, but that's most likely our crappy DSL)

I'm interested. How would I use this with my alarm system?

Things like alarms, modems, satellite receivers, credit card machines, and fax machines don't really work over any sort of VoIP service. Too much jitter.

The only reason I'd want a real landline is for 911 and the fact that during a power outage it will still work.

How can this company stay in business? They'll make money initially, but will eventually fold because there's no revenue stream except for the sale of new devices.

I also have one of these devices and highly recommend it. I've been using it and google voice exclusively for home phone for a couple of months now and am very satisfied. I plugged my Obi, router, and modem into a UPS to cover any power outages.

I've used one of these for months without any issues. I have callcentric as my second provider. If you need 911, you can sign up for a pay-as-you-go plan (i.e. free with no calls) with one of the many VOIP providers, and they will give you 911 service for about $1.50-$2.00 per month.

Ah, i was actually looking into that... so none of the providers give free 911 service? I wanted to add a second provider to my Obihai device for international and 911 service.

why would anyone pay extra to have 911? all you need is an unactivated cell phone... just keep it charged. power runs out, no prob. need to run outside with phone while on 911 no prob. lose the phone or break it no prob. lose it while you need to call 911 then u got a prob but just keep it plugged into the wall and all is good.
