So, I made a thread about a year ago here
I had just finished watching season one of TOS after never seeing a single Star Trek episode or movie for 23 years.
At this point I have seen:
all three seasons of TOS (own on DVD)
the two mini seasons of TOS cartoon (rented through Blockbuster)
almost three seasons of TNG (few left to watch) (own on DVD)
the first seven Star Trek movies (10 movie, 20 disk box collection for $35 FTW)
Not including the cartoon, I have seen roughly the same number of TOS episodes as TNG episodes. I have come to the conclusion that TOS>TNG. It's hard to describe but at the end of watching many TOS episodes, I thought to myself "wow, that was an hour of amazing television." I get that feeling with TNG as well, but not nearly as often. Anyway, it's a pretty subjective view but I feel the writing was better for TOS.
Thoughts about the movies:
1) would have made a good TOS episode because they didn't seem to have enough story for a movie
2) my favorite so far, but I doubt that's surprising
3) seemed like the whole movie was just made to undo what happened at the end of 2 (spoiler free) but overall it was still pretty good
4) the tone of the movie was basically a comedy, but it ended up working very well
5) to put it simply, I honestly wish I never saw this movie and I almost never say that (Star Wars Episode 1 included)
6) not great, but a good movie for the original cast to finish off on
7) it was a little gimmicky to get both Kirk and Picard in it, but it made more sense than what happened in 3.
Anyway, I'll probably spend the next year or so watching the rest of TNG. I'll also probably watch the remaining three movies before watching the rest of TNG even though they take place after the series ended. I have accepted that I am a Trekkie but I'm in no rush to go into Star Trek overload. I'll finish watching TNG and then figure out which other series to start watching.
