I now consider myself a Trekkie

So, I made a thread about a year ago here
I had just finished watching season one of TOS after never seeing a single Star Trek episode or movie for 23 years.

At this point I have seen:
all three seasons of TOS (own on DVD)
the two mini seasons of TOS cartoon (rented through Blockbuster)
almost three seasons of TNG (few left to watch) (own on DVD)
the first seven Star Trek movies (10 movie, 20 disk box collection for $35 FTW)

Not including the cartoon, I have seen roughly the same number of TOS episodes as TNG episodes. I have come to the conclusion that TOS>TNG. It's hard to describe but at the end of watching many TOS episodes, I thought to myself "wow, that was an hour of amazing television." I get that feeling with TNG as well, but not nearly as often. Anyway, it's a pretty subjective view but I feel the writing was better for TOS.

Thoughts about the movies:
1) would have made a good TOS episode because they didn't seem to have enough story for a movie
2) my favorite so far, but I doubt that's surprising
3) seemed like the whole movie was just made to undo what happened at the end of 2 (spoiler free) but overall it was still pretty good
4) the tone of the movie was basically a comedy, but it ended up working very well
5) to put it simply, I honestly wish I never saw this movie and I almost never say that (Star Wars Episode 1 included)
6) not great, but a good movie for the original cast to finish off on
7) it was a little gimmicky to get both Kirk and Picard in it, but it made more sense than what happened in 3.

Anyway, I'll probably spend the next year or so watching the rest of TNG. I'll also probably watch the remaining three movies before watching the rest of TNG even though they take place after the series ended. I have accepted that I am a Trekkie but I'm in no rush to go into Star Trek overload. I'll finish watching TNG and then figure out which other series to start watching.

you haven't watched all of TNG and you're making that conclusion... lol
extra lols if you've only watched the first 3 seasons of TNG.

Except that I've seen the same amount of TOS and TNG. I think it's most fair to see what each show did in that amount of time. Had TOS gone on for seven seasons, then watching all seven seasons of TNG would be fair.

the entirety of one series vs. the introductory seasons of another...

it's fair to compare the full TOS vs. the full TNG

SKip TNG and go straight to Voyager...
Tho you might need to watch like 4 episodes of TNG to gain background of the borg.

Next you'll be recommending that rockyct skip TNG and watch Enterprise! 🙁

Sounds like it's a great time for you to now watch the documentary Trekkies:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120370/

Followed immediately with the Tim Allen movie Galaxy Quest.

I love Star Trek, mostly TOS, TOS Movies, and TNG.

The best of Trek is to watch Space Seed, then Trek 2-4.

My favorite 2 moments are:

When Kirk missed sitting in the chair when his son is murdered, "You Klingon Bastards, you killed my son"

That is so emotional and raw, and at that moment, you just know Kirk is going to totally kick the shit out of Kruge (literally kicking him in the face was cathartic)

Then at the end of IV when he says "My friends, we've come home"

JESUS CHRlST MONKEY BALLS the Shat had better be in the new one...

TNG gets much better after the first 2 or 3 seasons. DS9 is good too.

I did hear that TNG gets better and I am enjoying it, but with only three seasons of material, TOS beats TNG.

I agree with you. However, when rating each series as a whole, this is how I rate them.

DS9
TNG
TOS
Enterprise
Voyager

Here are my ratings

DS9
TNG
Voyager
TOS

ugh, I hated DS9, loved TNG and Voyager and TOS is just classic

EDIT: Oh, and enterprise was great, especially the intro song

DS9
Voy
TNG (Its a tossup between Voy and TNG, but IMO Voy has a little bit of an edge because of 7)
TOS
Ent (the theme song is catchy but thats about it)

Voyager is my favorite. That seems to make me some sort of outcast.
I don't mind Enterprise either, but it's not that good.
Watching either DS9 or TNG next.

pretty much, Enterprise added soupy diareah to the vomiting though.

TOS
DS9
TNG
VOY
ENT

As far as the movies, 2 and 6 are my favorites by far. 4 would be next. I actually like 5. It has some bad spots, mainly because of budgetary restraints, but it has some of the best on screen interactions between the major characters.

I've read the original draft of the script and it was obviously way better, but Paramount didn't want to do it because it would have cost a lot more. The ending was supposed to be a huge battle on the planet surface with half human/half demon creatures and most of the Shakaree stuff was not in it.

That probably would have been better. It just seemed like they didn't know how to end it after they got to the planet, so hearing that a lot of other stuff was supposed to happen makes sense. I thought it was also sort of a cop out for the guy to be Spock's half brother.

I actually enjoy most of Voyager (with some exceptions), I'm curious (aside from simply saying "it sucked") as to what specifically everyone hates about it.
