Hey Ahriman6,

I went over to that Beyond3D.com, but there is a bit of reordering going on as they move to a new service provider. I read that the V5 6000 was no longer to be produced (cnn.com). If you heard different please fill in on the details.

Thanks

Hoolf:

Not sure what you mean. Yes, the 6K has been canned. No, the V5 isn't obsolete for games this Christmas (rocks Rune at 1024x768x22 with 4x FSAA, smooth as hell).

Heck, just read the V5 NG and saw that Staples has a $40 coupon off for purchases over $150. Now, they list the V5 5500 as $300, but the catch is that they price match and Onvia has the card for $177, which means even after shipping you can get a V5 for less than $150.

As Cartman would say: "Sweeeeeett!" :p

3dfx has dropped out of the graphics card business.

Not so. Although they will no longer be manufacturing the boards themselves, they will continue to market 3dfx branded video cards.

everyone is going ape$hit about this

THEY
ARE
OUTSOURCING
THEIR
BOARDS

like just about everybody in this entire business does

in other words, 3dfx are STILL MAKING 3DFX GRAPHICS CARDS, they just aren't *physically making* the boards themselves.

Make sense?

no?

tough. <g>

it really is a shame that so many websites seem to have an 'anti-3dfx' attitude anymore. the 5500 is an outstanding card, but the website reviewers just don't want to give it a break.

They seem to do everything they can to point out weaknesses and exaggerate perceived weaknesses, while tripping over themselves to cover up for other manufacturer's cards' weaknesses.

go figure?!!?!?

If you have a small penis and want to make up for it with a big 3dMark2000 score, get a GTS (kidding!!!!)

Seriously, the 5500 handles EVERYTHING at a very fast framerate with outstanding visuals. It may not bench as fast as the GTS in Q3 or MDK2, but with each driver release, their OGL drivers get better and better.

If anyone thinks 1600x1024 or 1024x768 w/2xFSAA @ 70 fps in MDK2, or 1024x768x32 @ 100 fps in Q3 with max texture and geometry (turn off that darn viewable weapon and gibs, brass, marks) is slow, then fine. I guess the 5500 IS too slow for them.

My weak kneed cowardly little self couldn't help it, I placed an order for a Voodoo5 5500 today. At these prices the Voodoo5 5500 has to be the price/performance king right now.

It'll be nice getting back with a no fuss no muss vidcard. I'm weary of tweaking my Viper2 to make it work in some games. I was going to wait for spring and get the Radeon(most likely), but this price is just too awesome!

Still no Voodoo 5 price drop over hear in the UK.

I'd be interested in seeing how low it goes...

LMAO! I literally just re-checked an online purchasing place in the UK, and sure enough they've just lowered the price of the Voodoo 5.

Was: ~220 UK Pounds

Is now: ~165 UK pounds

Not bad! That's basically the same price as a 32Meg DDR Radeon. I'm not sure which one I'd choose actually...A 32Meg GTS is still around ~190-210, so a bit more expensive, plus I wouldn't want one as I run my desktop at 1600x1200.
