I never went to college, but i just took the GRE practice exam for fun...

How far out of highschool are you? If you're used to standardized tests then you should do well regardless of college experience.

Here's the link if anyone else wants to take it. You have to download the "POWERPREP" software and take test #1.

Edit: It obviously doesnt factor in your essay score either, but im actually a pretty decent writer, so i think it'd only help my score.

*sigh* :/

Err, undergrad should be a lot more fun than grad school...

The discrepancy between the math and verbal score for me was 360........

Wow... on the practice test i got a 530 for the verbal and a 560 on the quantitative. That kind of suprised me too, since i suck at math and im a pretty good writer. I didnt prepare for it at all though, obviously, and just took it for kicks. If it was the real thing i think i might do a little better.

The verbal portion of the test is much harder than the quant; however, if you want to go to a good school for engineering or science, you pretty much need to be near perfect on the quant. So many people get 800's on it that the competition is stiff. Still, with a lot of practice anyone can get a high score on the quant part.

Yeah, quant is similar, if not easier, than the SATs. I suck at advanced math and yet I got 700 on the quant section. Verbal on the other hand was really difficult.

Yeah i noticed that, i was expecting some advanced math, but i didnt really see too much i didnt remember. I got a lot wrong, for sure, but not as much as id expected.

With college degrees becoming the new high school diploma (everyone gets one and its a requirement for practically every job) you'd think people would come away from it with more.

For that matter, why IS an undergrad degree a requirement for a more specific (grad school) education? I mean, when you go to a doctor, you dont care if he studied english for 4 years when he was a teenager, do you? You care about the medical education he got after.

Take the test and apply to grad schools. Perhaps you can convince a school that your life experiences will be enough for them to choose you over a person who went to a good four year universaty, took tough courses, and got good grades and letters of recommendations.

Dont pat yourself on the back too hard...the GRE is 8th grade level math...verbal is tough but if you read, you'll do better than most.

But doing well on the GRE is far from a replacement of a bachelors degree.

GRE is just like the SAT. they're indicators of your verbal and analytical skills and is comprised of stuff from high school education.

The GRE is an absolute joke. Thankfully, most graduate programs don't put a high degree of importance on it. It is nothing like the SAT in that regard.

What do you want to go to grad school for? There is nothing on the standard GRE that I've been taught in the last 4 years at college. Nothing on calculus I don't believe, nothing on differential equations, nothing on discrete math, nothing on linear algebra, nothing on algorithm analysis, nothing on language concepts, nothing on the theory of computation. So basically, if you have a good grasp of the English language and graduated high school you ought to do well on the GRE. Congrats, but college doesn't really prepare you to take the GRE.

neuropharmacology

edit: i know, i know. dont laugh too hard at me. 😛

You'll probably need to go to college. Only 23 is a little young for your life experiences to count for much. We all paid our dues in undergrad - it's just part of the deal.

Yeah i know... i was being kinda facetious with the whole thread.

Honestly though, did your undergrad experience help you later on in life? I dont just mean the education, but the connections you made and stuff like that. Has it helped? If it wasnt mandatory, would you still have gone? And dont say yes just because of the partying. 😛
