personally, I just don't like surround sound.

the movies that I tend to watch don't really lend themselves to it (though given the option, I'd prefer to have a really nice set of 2.1 speakers)

Maybe the speakers were only hooked up to the DVD player? You should have asked why, and offered to help them set it up if they wanted it.

Sound from TV stations isn't exactly the greatest, but it does certainly sound better on my surround speakers than my TV speakers. I don't even have any audio going to my TV.

Sometimes things on TV aren't in surround sound anyway or the surround sound is really not worth it.

but still, the whole point of having a home theater is to get away from using the speakers in your TV...

I only have two optical inputs on my receiver, and they're used by my Xbox 360 and my PS3. Can't use the optical output from my TV, so I just use the TV speakers when watching TV. No big deal to me.

The answer is simple: most people are hi-fi retarded.

you could use digital coax from your cable box, or even just the stereo RCA's, to acheive dolby pro-logic

I never understood people that have a nice home theater and yet to this day they aren't outputting 16x9 or HD from their sources or zoom/crop to get rid of those "annoying black bars".

I watch TV using TV speakers all the time. Do you really need to hear paper shuffling in The Office in full surround with the subwoofer rattling the walls tot the rhythm of a photocopier?

Movies: Surround sounds
TV: Who cares

For sports it's a huge difference listening in 5.1. Even if they're not broadcasting digitally in DD they use pro-logic matrixing to get surround (because they're recording in DD5.1 so they've got the channels). TV shows as well. Tons of prime-time TV has been in surround for 5+ years now. If not longer.

For movies, I use surround sound, but for regular tv, tv speakers are sufficient.

If the sounds of The Office rattle your walls, I would invest in a SPL meter and calibrate your sound system.

Most prime-time shows and sports have 5.1 soundtracks; 24, Lost, Prison Break, Sunday Night Football, even The Office, all sound great in surround.

In no situation is a 2.0 TV speaker setup going to best a 5.1 setup in any measure of sonic fidelity. It doesn't matter if its a dialog-driven comedy like The Office, or an explosion-ridden action/drama like 24.

on our basic cable, it sucks, none of the cable channels are in pro-logic, only the local channels :(

This is probably because pro logic sucks ass and they can't be bothered.

Ummm, you're cable company isn't responsible for any of that. pro-logic is a two channel delivery so unless your cable company is giving you mono.

Have you read your manual?

This is my feeling, too. Plus, the added volume is just not needed on an avg movie. My stereo DLP TV has nice sound quality, so I don't need to use the receiver for everyday tv watching.
