I never expected to see Millard Fillmore on my money.

I don't understand why the government doesn't just stop circulating $1 notes so we can stick with the less-costly $1 coins.

My belief has been that the $1 bill was protected by Ted Kennedy. There is only one company that supplies the "paper" (actually more like cloth) for US currency. The $1 bill consumes fully half of all of the supply. And that company is located in Ted Kennedy's state, Massachusetts.

Now that Ted has joined the choir invisible, perhaps there is an opportunity to get rid of the $1 bill.

tangential question relating to cost:
why aren't pennies and dollar bills made of plastic? other countries make change out of plastic, and i've had some fairly plasticky notes handed to me elsewhere as well. should be cheaper than the metal (in penny's case) and more durable than the linen (in dollar's case).

I hate the gold dollars. How are you suppose to snort coke with that? I'd use a $5/$10/$20 but shiet if I got that much I'm pickin up another bag!

It would cause massive problems for the vending machine industry.

You know I can name every president in the United States, in order, but even I forgot who Millard Filmore was. Had I been asked to do that this morning I would have got 43 right and missed him.

Was Millard Fillmore the obscure president recognized by MC Homicidal Rapist or Lil' Rapist in that Stroker and Hoop episode?

I'd like to take this chance to restate my idea:

Do away with the penny and the nickel. No need for either of those since they are worthless now. Round all sales, paychecks, anything related to money up to the nearest .1.

While we're at it lets do away with the dollar bill and go with dollar coins.

I heard it was him plus Trent Lott (whose state supplied the cotton, since bills are a combination of paper+cloth). Bipartisan idiocy! I don't know if anyone's tried to push it since the two of them left.

But yes. Stop making $1 bills. People will whine about it for a bit and then suck it up. Even Canada managed to do it.

I use them everyday, pay $3 parking for a surface lot downtown into a metal coin slot thingamajig. Keep a few rolls of coins in the center console, easier than folding a dollar into fifths and jamming it in the hole.

I think they're cotton and linen, no wood pulp. I like the metal dollars, and I agree with pulling support from paper dollars. What the hell are people gonna do if they quit printing them? They'll just bitch, and go on with life. If stopping paper dollars is the worst thing the government does, we'll all be doing pretty good.

If they get rid of $1 bills, does that mean the ladies will have to stuff coins into my banana hammock? Going to look like a baby that needs his diaper changed 🙁

I love dollar coins, they're so useful and much easier to handle than a shit ton of crumpled-up dollar bills. Of course I might have to get a wallet with a change pocket, but... totally worth it. I can't wait for dollar coins to enter circulation en masse.

BINGO. All "I need ones for the strippers!" jokes aside, this is the answer. The US Treasury Dept has to stop worrying about Whining William, US Citizen and just do what's cost effective...with the side bennie of convenience.

I have lived in the EU for the past few years. 1 and 2 Euro coins are the norm. I honestly do not miss a "1" bill in my pocket. Sure, coins weigh more. But the convenience of paying a 7 Euro tab with either a 5 Euro bill/2 Euro coin or two 1 Euro coin is very handy! It really is, fellow Americans!

On the flip side, buying a cup of coffee at the corner store and fishing a 1 Euro coin out of the pocket (and maybe getting back smaller coins in change) is a convenience, not a burden! You really have to live with it for a few months, get used to it and then you see the light, plain as day. Coins are in your pocket. You don't have to dredge out the wallet and fish through it for bills.

Kill the Dollar Bill now!

They'll have to give you $2 bills instead. Double your income!
