I need your help! Re-installed Win98 and Dial-up networking is not recognizing my modem!

I just clean-installed win98 and the dial-up networking wouldn't recognize my modem. It automatically puts it at com port 3 with Interrupt Req as 4. On my system device manager(?), com port 1 can only have Interrupt Req as 4,5 or 7. I thought the Int. Req should be same between the modem and the port it's using. However, modem Int. Req. # wouldn't budge (either 10, or 11) and port Int. Req# would only go for one of 4, 5, or 7.

I don't know if that's the problem.
The Dial-up Networking Wizard would continue to install driver for a modem(which is already installed) and never let me "select" the modem to use.

I'm trying to install PPPOE software, but, neither the RASPPPoE or Enternet would install properly. In RASPPPoE, it says it "couldn't find any dial-up devices exposed by the PPP over Ethernet Protocal."

Please help this ignorant user desperate to use Dialpad. :frown:
thank you

Rough thought: Sounds like it is trying to use resources commonly alloted to the mouse. Com Ports 3 and 1 are shared, as are ports 2 and 4. You could try removing the mouse, see if the modem responds to a ping. (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Modems->Diagnostics Tab->Select the COM Port the modem is on->Click More Info... (of course this only applies to a COM Mouse, not PS/2)

Lots of data should be returned in the small field, if nothing or an error occurs then the modem is not configured properly because of a : hardware setting/resource allocation problem, driver problem, physical problem with the modem.

If its not the mouse -- I would shoot for drivers first. I hate modems, especially PNP winmodems :)

Thanks for your help.

Actually, modem is secondary... i don't care if it doesn't work, because i have DSL. However, Raspppoe or Enternet doesn't want to be installed...
