I need your help, Gentlemen

What I need to know is if there is a way to obtain an IP address from a message sent from a hotmail account.

A friend of mine is getting threatening emails from someone using a hotmail user name as her last name and the last 4 digits of her phone number.

She's contacted the police, but apparently they're doing nothing about it. I don't think it's very serious at this point, but I'd like to help her out.

Any ideas ?

Usually what my friends do is they bring me with them during potential fights and they put me in the front. The other people usually laugh or run when they see me. If you ever find out who it is, I will be glad to help!

maybe if your friend replied with an image in it you could track her IP address when the image is opened up

I've done that then checked to logs on my server to see who accessed it.

I was thinking about the image thing also, but I'm not sure how she should handle this.

Would reporting this to msn actually do anything? I doubt they would give up an IP over such a claim, and even then I'm not entirely sure what to do if I have their IP aside from conact the ISP.

Is this totally legal though? She's working for the City of Ottawa and suspects it's a fellow employee, something like that, so I don't want to even risk getting her in trouble.

When you want to trace spam to its source and report the network abuse to the ISP, or to see mailing list commands hidden in header lines, it is important to see the mail's full headers.

By default, Hotmail only shows a few important headers, but you can configure it to display all header lines.

Unfortunately, it is not possible in Hotmail to switch the display on the fly from within a message. But there's a general option.

To make Hotmail display all header lines:

* Select Options from the top Hotmail navigation bar.
* Make sure the Mail category is selected.
* Choose Mail Display Settings.
* Set Message Headers to Full.
* Click OK.

Now you can go back to the Hotmail Inbox (or any folder) to open a message with full headers.

Check the headers of the email. The exact location of where the email was sent from is listed there

edit: guess I was too late. Had to help out a co-worker with printer issues.
