Lol this is stressing me out tonight.

Ok we go. I have XP pro on the main pc and xp home on the laptop. I have a linksys 4 port router and DCHP enabled for the laptop.

Im confused when I setup a VPN in the wizzard. Im not sure what my IP should be set to when I setup the VPN's here is a beakdown of what the setup says inthe routers setup config

IP Address: 24.187.145.xxx
Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway: 24.187.144.1
DNS: 167.206.112.100
167.206.112.138
167.206.7.4
DHCP Remaining Time: 3 days 11:47:32

I tryed to connect to them all from the cliant PC the host. but none work. I am loging in as a Administrator too? I have the Administrator set as a remote user on the host as well.

can someone shed some light here? PLEASE why cant i connect.

Is your router a VPN router? If so, follow this example from Linksys: http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=86

VPN is implemented in a client/server scheme, just like DHCP and DNS but VPN can also be implemented in a server to server setup (gateway to gateway vs the previous gateway to host). Therefore you need something called a VPN server to create a VPN with any PC as VPN client. A VPN server can be any specialized software which runs on 2000/XP Pro/Home (sorry, don't know of any), or something that runs on some *nix version, or something built into Windows 2000 Server/.Net server, or some hardware like the Linksys VPN Router which can also function as a VPN server.

Two XP Pro PC's or two 2000 or XP Home PC's cannot do it with the built in software. If you can't find Win32 VPN server software that is free (I don't know of any), then you need to buy it. However, I would recommend a hardware solution over a software solution anyday. Linksys VPN Routers can cost you around $150 each.

Interesting subnetting on your example there. I notice most people take the standard subnets, but yours is definitely interesting, but then how else would you get the IP address of the PC and the gateway address in the same subnet?

thanks for the detailed post JustinLerner, and for your time. Thanks for the good link. Im reading it now.
